Julia Cook was born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah. While living in Utah, she began teaching children how to ski. That experience led to a love of teaching in general. Julia now lives with her husband and three children in Fremont, Nebraska. She has a Master s degree in Elementary School Counseling. While serving as a guidance counselor, Julia often used children s books to enhance her classroom lessons. it works!

This book captivated my kindergarten children. I have children with Asperger syndrome who are very bright and intelligent but often don't do the appropriate thing in social situations. We had a big problem with one particular child, his finger, his nose, and more. We laughed so much with this book. The kids requested it over and over. The therapists, guidance counselors, and other teachers want to borrow it. It Works!!! After one day, the nose picking, etc. was extinguished. The book sends a powerful and explicit message about germs and about socially acceptable behavior. It taught the children how others react to their behavior. It is a must have in any early childhood or special education class. Love it.

A fun read, which says a lot for church history

I have been reading church history books this summer, and this is by far the best read I've come across yet. Limberis first describes Constantine's founding of Constantinople, and explains how moving the capital from Rome enabled him to create a new imperial civic religion-Christianity hybrid. She shows how imperial civic religion morphed into a Christianized version, and then made its way into the church (as in, into church buildings and services) under Theodosius and especially Pulcheria. She examines previous patristic writings on Mary, the worship of goddesses Rhea, Tyche, and others, as well as imperial panergyic to show that the reverence for Mary which developed in Constantinople was a unique blend of all of them. A good synthesis of a wide range of material.
I a amateur when it comes to Church history, but I found this book exciting, clear, and compelling. I would recommend it. I don't think you would be offended by it even if you are a devout Catholic or Eastern Orthodox, because her focus is not on the veneration of Mary per se, but the form that developed in Constantinople from the fourth century onwards.

Practical Tips and Exercises for Better "Life Balance"

Disclaimer: I know and have worked with Laura in the past.

I'll readily admit to being challenged over the years to find what is typically described as "work life balance" --- over 16 years of working at Amazon and Microsoft can do that to someone. As someone who just recently left MS and began to think about rebalancing my priorities, I was keen on reading Laura's playbook and see how it could help me. There are three things that I really appreciate about "The Life Balance Playbook":

1. Reframing of "work life" balance to "life" balance
This idea was the most important part of the book for me. As I read the book, I constantly kept circling back to what are my core values and what is most important in my life. While work plays a role and I derive many benefits and much pleasure, it is just not the end all for me. For some people, or at some points in life, it may very well be for you. Spending time thinking about the key motivators for me in life and then planning on how to ensure they become the priority points and can stay in balance in the short and long term has been critical for me.

2. Puts the Onus on You to Control Your Life Balance:
I intentionally noted above what Amazon and Microsoft can do to someone. While I worked at both places, I often felt less in control of my "work life" balance and ultimately always put the "life" part second to the work. As I read Laura's book, I appreciate her focus on the individual taking control. We all often fall into the trap of thinking circumstances control us and this can result in feeling helpless and with less control over our time. We often say it is our manager, the company, a project. However, it all comes down to individual choices and what we deem most important. If the most important element in your life is work, that will determine how you balance your life. If it is something else, make that what drives your balance.

3. Practical Exercises:
Laura's book provides so many practical exercises to enable you to take control and determine how to find your life balance. While no one is going to find use or even complete all the exercises, I think it is great to have a wide variety of options. As a result, you can find what most appeals to you and is most likely to incite a mental and behavioral change for you. Simply reading any "self help" book is unlikely to change behavior and finding new methods or tips/tricks to shift your behavior is critical. As Einstein said "Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." If you have a self identified life balance issue, simply reading any book, including this one, without making any material changes will lead nowhere. Try something different an there are some good ideas to try out in this book.

If you are struggling to find balance in life, Laura's book is very practical and a worthwhile investment in your self. You just might learn something about yourself through some of the exercises and be able to make changes that will allow you to find your own "life balance".

An insightful book in discovering the patterns I've made for myself and how to break them.

Whenever I think of life balance, I tend to dismiss it as something that "career women" deal with, and as a stay at home mom I don't (or shouldn't) have this problem. This book caught my eye because I have been struggling with feelings of guilt and inadequacy in my role as a non working person, and I was looking to find the life I DESERVE (see subtitle, you can see why I picked this up!). I need help creating the life I want and establishing boundaries. The exercises allowed me to personalize my particular life balance and identify my areas of stress, guilt, and imperfections. If I look at a typical day, where do I spend most of my time? Where would I LIKE to be spending more of my time?

The chapter with the most impact for me was the chapter on Dealing with Myself: the saboteur, the procrastinator, and most importantly- the HERO. Defining who I want to be as opposed to who I want to be perceived as can be very eye opening. This is done very creatively through the exercises. The "I choose challenge" helped me to give a hard look at my life. Where I was doing things I felt I "should" do when I could make them into things I "choose" to do. Example: I stress about cooking. I hate it, yet I feel it is part of my role as stay at home mom. Instead, I can choose to create simple, low stress meals and focus on the family times that my meals inspire.

I am not someone who wants to put a lot of deep thought into what I am doing, I just want to keep moving forward. The exercises were simple but really made me think about my own situation. It forced me to stop and think about what I am doing in my life that is not working.

Overall, I was looking for a book that would give me some inspiration and guidance on how to change my thinking in small ways that would make a difference in my life. This book has given me a blueprint to making the changes that I need to give myself a life balance where I can feel more productive and fulfilled.

Stress inducing (Not in a good way)

OMG I'm so disappointed with this book. I absolutely LOVE JM Sevilla's Marked series. So when I saw this book I stopped everything to read it. I was THRILLED. On that note. What an utter disappointment. Yes the beginning of the book was great. The way the characters developed, I was hooked. Then almost towards the half way mark, the book just took a turn for the worst. When I say worst, I mean I absolutely hate this book and if I had read this book first, I'd never read anything from this author again.

This is where the spoilers come in so if you don't want to see it, then don't continue. I'll try not to get too specific.

If we didn't have just the stupid decision makings, you had the player who slept around like crazy and then did it right under the h's nose for no good reason. Why was that particular H even in the book? They don't get together till the very end. The story is mostly about the Hs or hs with other people. I"m not interested in reading about a romance where they have other girlfriends or boyfriends. And don't even get me started on Ava and Parker. I hate those two What she did to Wes was so stupid that if I were his sisters I would have given her a much needed beat down. And Parker? How the HECK is he a H in this book. He's usually the one the h opens her eyes about and dumps his butt. So there goes 2/3 of the romance. Then you have Ryker and Megan (I think that's their names). That was boring. Megan was an idiot and I think it should have been her who met her demise. Sorry for the harsh words but after having to read this garbage, I have no other opinion. Now to go back to my old trusty Sweet Temptation by KC Lynn to put me in a good mood again.

I wish this author would have stuck to her style of riding. Or at least kept the H and the h someone you'd want to be with.

Loved this author up until this book.The story is so juvenile, had I known it was filled from beginning to end with a bunch a puberty and high school kids full of angsts and issues I would have passed.This is definitely a YA book. The Marked series was great.It was exciting, suspenseful and funny at times with a great love story and epilogue. It should have stayed there. I was so excited in the beginning of the book, old characters were back and it was looking promising telling about "our favorite couple's friends".Unfortunately it then turned into a teenage coming of age book with so many characters and to much nonsense.Shame because the first few chapters had great potential to tell a wonder story before it all went to the kids.

Wow! Incredibly Well Written.

5 stars!!! I took my time reading this book. First of all the evolution from the Noah Baxter suspense series to this was phenomenally seamless. Yes, this can easily be a stand-alone, but why would you not want to fully immerse yourself in the fantastic all-encompassing saga of ‘The Baxters’? When to Let Go is about Noah and Lilly’s kids. There is no main hero or heroine in this book but instead a handful of main characters who become intricately folded into each others lives. I did not want to miss a beat as they all sorted through their growing pains, and my heart melted with each chapter. The author poured all she has in making these characters captivating. I felt this and became emotionally invested in each page, not wanting this read to end.

Loved it

I can't wait for part 3. I loved the relationship between Nico and Gabriel and even though Matty sometimes felt jealous it was never in a suspicious way and he never got between them. I hope to see ALL the characters in the new book but I'm hoping to see that Alpha male Moretti come out and take care of business. Women and children are supposed to be off limits. Great read!!!

I tried y'all...I tried desperately to get into this book...
I should've stayed with my first instinct....after a long avoidance of book 1 and all the less than stellar reviews....I decided to get both books...and now I know better..the lead female character Nico comes off spoiled,over indulgent,bratty and very immature...it seems her male counterpart Matthew comes off as the mature and responsible husband and father...she pouts and whines and have meltdowns at the drop of a hat...constantly behaving outrageously with other men and especially with her husband's brother....I fast forwarded to the end and to my delight she got shot....finally.....I could not take one more word from her mouth....I am definitely not looking forward to a part 3 ...it's a shame though...I really hoped this author was going to improve on her story telling....it feels like bits and pieces from similar well written stories.....too bad

This was better than the 1st. Loved the storyline and the ending was shocking and can't wait to find out what happens next. It was a few flaws as for the details, you told me what they were wearing are how they looked on one page, and turned around and told me again on another page. I did not need to know what they were wearing on every other page. That would be my only critique but I did love the storyline and can't wait for the next, hope it's not a long wait especially after the shocking ending.

Great team book

I have really enjoyed this book. The worship team I am part of is currently using this as a study & it has been great. It has short sections, which are easy for a big group with lots of discussion. Redman asks thought-provoking questions to jump-start those discussions. It has provided lots of insight in how worship doesn't end when we leave church. We worship all the time, in everything that we do. It's been an eye-opening book for anyone, but especially those involved with worship leading. Plus it's so small, I can stick it in my purse and read it whenever I have a few spare minutes!

I'm not even finished reading the book yet and have discovered so much about myself and how I lead worship and how I need to improve. SO insightful!

Here are some key things I personally learned so far:

Be passionate but never forceful
Immerse in God's word, be a theologian
Mentor, invest what has been invested in you
Be humble (Not as humble as I thought till I read a certain chapter)
READ the Psalms and study them. They're a big part of worship in the Bible
Seek relational accountability. Learn from others how your worship/life is and how it needs improvement

I've read many spurious versions of Annie Oakley's life. Now I don't have to read another, because I've seen the real story as documented by Riley. Her scholarship is outstanding, and she analyses Oakley's role as symbol of the showbiz Western myth as well as her quiet, hardworking life behind the scenes. If you like the dramatic lies, this book is not for you. If you want a portrait of Oakley as a woman and a symbol, read this.

This was one of the sources that I used for my college term paper. Glenda Riley is concise and simple in her explanations; she does not "wander" in explaining and includes an extensive index which makes this an invaluable scholastic reference. I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to quickly sort out the fact from the ficition of Annie Oakley.

Heavy on the Feminism

The facts in this book seem complete and accurate. We learn that Annie Oakley did not deliberately lose a shooting match to Frank Butler as she did in "Annie Get Your Gun," a product of the unfeminist fifties.
The information on the trials of Oakley's early life was especially interesting. I felt the book bogged down when the author began trying to fit Oakley into a feminist straitjacket, relating everything she did and didn't do to its connection with women's rights. I also grew tired of hearing how sweet, feminine, and ladylike Oakley was.
