Laura is a career and life coach, workshop leader, and speaker on topics of life balance, collaboration, and communication. She lives outside Seattle with her family. Laura spent 20 years in corporate America, including 10+ years as a working-mom who maintained balance while surviving and thriving in the competitive, fast paced high-tech industry. She holds an MBA from the University of Minnesota, BA from Luther College and is a Certified Professional CoActive Coach (CPCC).

Practical Tips and Exercises for Better "Life Balance"

Disclaimer: I know and have worked with Laura in the past.

I'll readily admit to being challenged over the years to find what is typically described as "work life balance" --- over 16 years of working at Amazon and Microsoft can do that to someone. As someone who just recently left MS and began to think about rebalancing my priorities, I was keen on reading Laura's playbook and see how it could help me. There are three things that I really appreciate about "The Life Balance Playbook":

1. Reframing of "work life" balance to "life" balance
This idea was the most important part of the book for me. As I read the book, I constantly kept circling back to what are my core values and what is most important in my life. While work plays a role and I derive many benefits and much pleasure, it is just not the end all for me. For some people, or at some points in life, it may very well be for you. Spending time thinking about the key motivators for me in life and then planning on how to ensure they become the priority points and can stay in balance in the short and long term has been critical for me.

2. Puts the Onus on You to Control Your Life Balance:
I intentionally noted above what Amazon and Microsoft can do to someone. While I worked at both places, I often felt less in control of my "work life" balance and ultimately always put the "life" part second to the work. As I read Laura's book, I appreciate her focus on the individual taking control. We all often fall into the trap of thinking circumstances control us and this can result in feeling helpless and with less control over our time. We often say it is our manager, the company, a project. However, it all comes down to individual choices and what we deem most important. If the most important element in your life is work, that will determine how you balance your life. If it is something else, make that what drives your balance.

3. Practical Exercises:
Laura's book provides so many practical exercises to enable you to take control and determine how to find your life balance. While no one is going to find use or even complete all the exercises, I think it is great to have a wide variety of options. As a result, you can find what most appeals to you and is most likely to incite a mental and behavioral change for you. Simply reading any "self help" book is unlikely to change behavior and finding new methods or tips/tricks to shift your behavior is critical. As Einstein said "Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." If you have a self identified life balance issue, simply reading any book, including this one, without making any material changes will lead nowhere. Try something different an there are some good ideas to try out in this book.

If you are struggling to find balance in life, Laura's book is very practical and a worthwhile investment in your self. You just might learn something about yourself through some of the exercises and be able to make changes that will allow you to find your own "life balance".

An insightful book in discovering the patterns I've made for myself and how to break them.

Whenever I think of life balance, I tend to dismiss it as something that "career women" deal with, and as a stay at home mom I don't (or shouldn't) have this problem. This book caught my eye because I have been struggling with feelings of guilt and inadequacy in my role as a non working person, and I was looking to find the life I DESERVE (see subtitle, you can see why I picked this up!). I need help creating the life I want and establishing boundaries. The exercises allowed me to personalize my particular life balance and identify my areas of stress, guilt, and imperfections. If I look at a typical day, where do I spend most of my time? Where would I LIKE to be spending more of my time?

The chapter with the most impact for me was the chapter on Dealing with Myself: the saboteur, the procrastinator, and most importantly- the HERO. Defining who I want to be as opposed to who I want to be perceived as can be very eye opening. This is done very creatively through the exercises. The "I choose challenge" helped me to give a hard look at my life. Where I was doing things I felt I "should" do when I could make them into things I "choose" to do. Example: I stress about cooking. I hate it, yet I feel it is part of my role as stay at home mom. Instead, I can choose to create simple, low stress meals and focus on the family times that my meals inspire.

I am not someone who wants to put a lot of deep thought into what I am doing, I just want to keep moving forward. The exercises were simple but really made me think about my own situation. It forced me to stop and think about what I am doing in my life that is not working.

Overall, I was looking for a book that would give me some inspiration and guidance on how to change my thinking in small ways that would make a difference in my life. This book has given me a blueprint to making the changes that I need to give myself a life balance where I can feel more productive and fulfilled.
