If you know Brideshead you will love Jeremy's reading of it
By johnM
This version of Brideshead Revisited written by Evelyn Waugh is the audiobook which is read by Jeremy Irons. I have tried to locate this version for years without luck. Then by chance I located it in a library in Calgary USA. In the UK it's just impossible to find. If you know Brideshead you will love Jeremy's reading of it. He strikes the perfect balance in his speech pattern and is able to convey disdain, surprise, cordiality and love. For me after all these years since watching it first on Granada TV back in the early eighties and having the DVD's of both the original and the Ben Whishaw version it was like hearing the voice of an old friend. Oddly I only read the book after seeing the Granada series and have re-read it countless times since, my dog-eared copy is well thumbed. To hear Jeremy read it, is like opening a time capsule, it takes me back to those bleak austere days of the three day week, power cuts, and wild-cat strikes. The enunciation, clarity of speech and impeccable diction will leave you reeling. I always find some new word to research when re-reading Brideshead and listening to Jeremy corrects my mispronunciation of Latin. If you have not heard this you are missing out. John M P.S. Hope this helps you decide.

KINDLE IS ORIGINAL EDITION
By D. Gibson
Nothing to add regarding the story, Brideshead is and will be, one of my favorite novels. A note about editions though; Waugh originally published Brideshead Revisited in 1945. Waugh wrote it during the war years and with time, developed a "growing dissatisfaction with its literary style. He found it too lush, too decorative or ornamental in too many places." For me, that "lushness" is one of the reasons that I fell in love with the language of the novel. He republished the novel in 1959, with a number of the passages trimmed or "toned down". There are some additions as well but overall the novel is tightened up (although I would disagree with the author that his revised version is "better"). For more information you can read "Companion to Evelyn Waugh's 'Brideshead Revisited' by David Cliffe on the internet. Through a convoluted history, which need not be discussed here, the original or first edition is referred to as the "American" edition and the revised one is the "British" edition. I own both copies in hardback myself and find that both have merits but as previously stated, my preference is the original. I am glad to say that the Kindle version appears to be the original version. I have found the quickest way to tell which one you are reading is by going to Book I, Chapter 1 'Et in Arcadia Ego' (God knows how much has been written on that memento mori) and reading the first paragraph. In the original edition the words "fool's-parsley" is written and the phrase is "soft vapors of a thousand years of learning". In the revised edition, the fool's-parsley is eliminated and the phrase is changed to "soft airs of centuries of youth". Hope this helps as the original version available on the Kindle was the revised one. Which begs the question, for $9.68, why can't the publisher include both editions?

In a Way, Julia';s Story
By C. Adelman
Forget the disquisitions on editions and variations. Stick with the text of your narrator's visuals of Brideshead itself, the country around it, and the characters. On the latter, Sebastian's drinking gets very tedious, and, for a while, you think this is a thin portrayal of alcoholism. Then he fades away. Was his relationship to the narrator one of adolescent homosexuality? You can't tell, though it leans that way, and the British aristocracy was full of it at the time. When Julia emerges, along with the narrator's adult relationships, the novel shines, and verges on becoming her story, psychology, and religious conflicts. The latter, it is said, is the principal subject of the book. Yeah, the position of Catholics in England is part of the tapestry, but to me, just a part. Theology in the Lord's long death sequence gets a bit boring.
