An audience sits in the pews waiting, and each of those who sit there bring with them a long and complicated history. How will you reach them? How will you awaken them? "Tell them the truth," Buechner says in this brief and powerful book. The Gospel begins here, out of this silence: "It is life with the sound turned off so that for a moment or two you can experience it not in terms of the words you make it bearable by but for the unutterable mystery that it is." Out of this silence, he writes, the "real news comes, which is sad news before it is glad news and that is fairy tale last of all."

This series of lectures explores these three ways of seeing the Gospel: first as tragedy, as honest sorrow and suffering--this must be faced before anything else becomes possible. From this comes the comedy of new life: a child born to Abraham and Sarah in old age, Lazarus raised from the dead. This is the folly of the Gospel--what Buechner will ultimately call the fairy tale. A Must Read ... and Re-Read

Frederick Buechner's 'Telling the Truth' is one of those little books, so packed with great things, it needs repeated reading. Not that it is difficult to read, it is just full of huge ideas and grand truth.
Buechner revisits various aspects of the gospel. But his first challenge to the reader is to confront the silence of truth. Using as an example the silence of Jesus in response to Pilate's question "What is truth?", Buechner suggests truth may not be far from the ordinariness of our everyday lives - if only we would pause to realise.
'Telling the Truth' uses the recurring picture of a preacher getting up to preach. Buechner describes in detail the scene in the church, the congregation who have come to the church for so many different reasons and the inadequacies the preacher feels but, as the preacher lays out his notes "like a riverboat gambler, the stakes have never been higher."
'Telling the Truth' considers the gospel as "tragedy, comedy and fairy tale" in turn and ultimately Buechner finds the gospel "a tale that is too good not to be true."
If you only read one book each year, make it 'Telling the Truth' this year - and next year.

A Guide to Christian Preaching

"The Gospel is bad news before it is good news. It is the news that man is a sinner... That is the tragedy. But it is also the news that he is loved anyway, cherished, forgiven.... That is the comedy.... In answer, the news of the Gospel is that extraordinary things happen to him just as in fairy tales extraordinary things happen."
And that is the basis for Frederick Buechner's book. That as evangelists we need to remember that the Bible is more than just a book, it starts as tragedy, it becomes so outrageous to be comedic and then amongst it all, God loves us so much that it's a fairy tale. And as with all fairy tales, that all who accept the outcome, the ending is happy. And we must keep all those things in mind. And preach the Bible with love.
Frederick Buechner uses a number of "secular" works to illustrate his points. He points to the tragedy of "King Lear" by Shakespeare, he goes over the fairy tale sof C.S Lewis' "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" and Frank Baum's "The Wizard of Oz".
To illustrate the comedy of the Bible, he turns to the Bible itself, going over the promise of God to Abraham and Sarah about the birth of Isaac, and how they laughed... the idea seemed so preposterous. And it does seem preposterous in a way, the promises of the Bible... so outrageous as to be almost impossible to believe. And that is why the Bible turns out to be fairy tale, because what is "too good to be true" isn't. It happens, and it happens to us.
Buechner writes with colorful prose, but you won't get lost in the verbiage and his meaning will come out crystal clear. He conveys to us a message that speaks to us and tells us to speak the Word with urgency, and do it emphatically, colorfully, just as the Bible is colorful itself. Do it with compassion, do it with love and do it with inspiration.
"Let the preacher tell the truth. Let him make audible the silence of the news of the world with the sound turned off so that in that silence we can hear the tragic truth of the Gospel, which is that the world where God is absent is a dark and echoing emptiness; and the comic truth of the Gospel, which is into the depths of his absence that God makes himself present in such unlikely ways and to such unlikely people... you and I laugh till the tears run down our cheeks. And finally let him preach this overwhelming of tragedy by comedy, of darkness by light, of the ordinary by the extraordinary, as the tale that is too good not to be true because to dismiss it as untrue is to dismiss along with it the catch of the breath, that beat and lifting of the heart near to or even accompanied by tears, which I believe is the deepest intuition of truth that we have."

this was a really great book for my daughter. I have read it to her several times. It was well done and the morals that were depicted were very good. Helps to understand that the inclusion of all even the ones that are different and scary is very helpful.

A Master Teacher's Workshop Charts

I agree with Verena Blackburn's review.
Many watercolorists teach workshops. Some merely demonstrate, painting a painting or 2 or 3, and lecture a little, at times the same old clues--you are supposed to learn by example but little else. On the other hand, some work at teaching as hard as they work at painting, and Tom Lynch is among the finest of these.
These 100 charts are for the intermediate-to-advanced watercolor painter. They are brief in explanation (particularly when it comes to Watercolor jargon), so it helps to know a lot of the common watercolor terminology. However, these charts represent the heart of Lynch's comprehensive teaching--he covers nearly everything--both with beautiful illustrations and reproduced paintings of his, which one can easily see accurately illustrate and clarify the text. But they are more than this. Lynch's design/composition/color approaches as well as techniques for rendering specific subject matter are insightful and often like revelations, the product of his many years of painting and teaching. He is able to capture in a few words art wisdom in a way I have not frequently found (I have about 80-90 watercolor painting books). It's obvious that Lynch has thought through and used successfully many times the techniques he captures in the charts. And, he has a way of communicating to you what you need to know to be successful. These charts contain, in concise form, watercolor knowledge that would probably take many of us years to acquire on our own.
Years ago (15 at least), I watched a number of Lynch's teaching presentations on public television (I also bought one of his first instructional books), and those few lessons did more for my understanding of watercolor and painting success than most workshops I have attended. They gave me what you might call a "quantum leap." These charts contain more. Honestly, I would have paid 10 times their retail price to own them, by the way.
One final word, if you buy these charts, it would be good to also buy his book "Watercolor Secrets," which covers some of the same points but also provides more text and explanations than the charts do. This would especially be wise if you are closer to the beginner end of the intermediate range.

Not what I expected or needed, and not for beginners.

I ordered this book, looked it over, and sent it back. I'm a relative beginner to watercolors. I wanted something step-by-step, and from the description, I thought the book would have many projects and paintings to try. This is not the case. It has page after page of vague suggestions for techniques--this author is especially enthralled by spraying water and paint onto the paper from spray bottles--not what I was interested in at all. This book might be good for painters who are accomplished and want to try new techniques, but I wanted a basic book with basic techniques. I also wanted some step-by-step paintings, something that an experienced painter probably wouldn't need. This book is not for beginners.

The listings given here are intended as an aid in understanding the FFT and associated algorithms such as spectral window weightings, with the goal of making the best of them more accessible to the reader. The code I use here provides a simple bridge between the material in the text and implementation in FORTRAN 2003, C++, Java, MATLAB ©, and other modem languages. The examples are sufficiently simple to be translated into older languages such as C and FORTRAN 77 if desired.

Although numerous books and articles have recently talked about the gut instincts as valuable in giving us useful hunches in the decision-making process, What's Behind Your Belly Button? goes much further and explains how gut feelings not only have a psychological intelligence of their own, but are also understandably rational in their functioning. The authors explore how gut feelings are like a gas gauge in our guts indicating through an emotional feeling of emptiness or fullness how well the two instinctive human needs for acceptance (attention from others) and of control of one's own responses (freedom) in our lives are being met and how our behavior attempts to keep these two instinctive needs in balance at all times. They explore how these two instinctive needs motivate our personality all through our lives and that the feeling memory of how well these needs are met from moment-to-moment may be accessed through somatic awareness of our gut feelings of empty and full by using the Somatic Reflection Process the authors have developed.

In 1998, neurological research at Columbia University published the work of Dr. Michael Gershon that identified the enteric nervous system as a center of feeling intelligence in the gut, which he called the "Second Brain". The authors carefully examined this material and accepted the research findings as pointing to the same universal feeling intelligence they experienced in counseling with hundreds of people. Utilizing the medical research of Dr. Gershon, the work of Dr. Lise Eliot who charts the development of children from conception through the first five years of life, recent research of their own in the Psychology Department at Sonoma State University, and their vast clinical experience, the authors have presented an interpretation of recent medical research into a Gut Psychology and a more accurate understanding of the Self and human nature than has previously been available. They share a complete protocol and results of their clinical research findings for the Somatic Reflection Process that they have created and used successfully, with themselves and hundreds of people, to assist the process of getting in touch with the voice of the gut and learning to follow its wisdom toward a healthy life--unifying the body-mind split in the individuation process of personal development.

Over a period of 45 years, there has been a utilization of further graduate studies in Depth Psychology and Religious Education on the part of the authors, and giant steps forward in the fields of Neurology and Psychology, which help form a new more accurate image of human nature. The authors present this new image of human nature and the meaning of its understanding in making positive changes in our lives. They suggest that we are at the beginning of a Renaissance in human consciousness and that understanding our true human nature is the way to thrive in this present era. This book also discusses the implications of this new image of human nature in education and for rehabilitation of those incarcerated. The authors suggest that early in the child's learning process of personality and development, care be taken to offer the experience of freedom and acceptance to the preschooler to form a positive self-concept and to self-regulate his or her behavior as part of the learning process in becoming a loving, caring person.

After careful examination of life's processes, they conclude that of all the mammals in the animal kingdom, humans seem to be the only species that has been denied the open use of their natural instincts. "Out of ignorance, fear or wanton control by others, we are denied the use of the brains we were born with". This awareness is of growing concern since the absence of the use of the feeling intelligence of the body interferes with a major stabilizing force--built into the human system--that can affect human behavior, provide a sense of well-being, and the ability of the body to combat disease.

We wrote this book as a narrative of the maturation of the sciences (Psychology and Neurology) and using our combined experiences, all of which started to take form in the 1960s with the unrest of youth over the Vietnam war--the era of "give peace and love a chance". In the 1970s, we were involved in a college occupational and academic counseling-teaching assignment, dealing with the aftermath of the previous era of changes in society and integration of the Black and White cultures. Having no effective references with which to work, we used a personality inventory (Myers Briggs Type Indicator), based on the theories of Dr. Carl Jung. Experience with groups and individuals soon allowed feelings of the students involved to surface at a variety of levels, which were centered on personal disturbances of their pasts and were not defined by the inventory. Hours of study of what we were learning from students, suggested that we were tapping into genuine universal instinctive feeling intelligence, primarily focused in the gut area of the body. It was at that time that we first developed the Somatic Reflection Process to assist people in accessing their gut feeling memory and gut intelligence. It was also then that we wrote a text for our classes about the gut instinctive responses that we were discovering with people we were working with in career exploration and much of that material has been included in this book.

Since our initial years of working together at Santa Fe College, we both have continued to work and study in the field of psychology and education, as well as to keep up a correspondence comparing notes on our subsequent work in education. In 2005, Martha received her second MA in Depth Psychology and continued her study of the gut instinctive response in a research study at Sonoma State University. Bob continued to work in the educational field as a counselor and college teacher and then as an administrator in a privately funded experimental high school near Gainesville, Florida. With the new medical breakthroughs on gut intelligence, we decided to compile our lives' work in a book and share it with the medical and psychological community as well as the general public.

What's Behind Your Belly Button? explains what your gut feelings are actually capable of telling you about your inner instinctive needs, how to listen to the voice of your gut, and how to use both of your brains--head and gut--to work together for your optimal health and wellness. We have included in this book a complete protocol for the Somatic Reflection Process on gut feelings that we developed to be used with both individuals and in groups. It is our hope that readers will find using this protocol useful in exploring gut intelligence and in uniting the two brains--gut and head--for developing higher intuitive intelligence.

Authors Love and Sterling point out in their dedication of this book to the youth of the 50s and 60s, that they were the first to realize the power love and peace offers in uniting the various differences within humanity. This was not explainable then -- just a "gut feeling".

Since those times the authors have, through extensive research and counseling sessions, along with neurological studies, been able to identify the gut as a second brain; one more in tune with somatic reactions to stress and emotional feelings. Once people learn how to combine the two brains, it becomes possible to use that natural combination to experience healing, stress reduction and dis-ease.

The authors, working on the premise that "nature creates the situations called problems and man discovers the solutions," present a protocol for "facilitating the Somatic Reflection Process". An external guide called a facilitator guides the patient through a process of acceptance of feelings, past and present, allowing the person to share emotional inner needs which are often the cause of physical distress. People through language, such as, "I feel like I got punched in the gut," or " I got a gut instinct about this," have always sensed that the gut was the seat of emotion leading to illness and duress. Many actors routinely throw up before a performance; others become nervous over something and experience diarrhea or cannot eat.

Using the Somatic Process can help people bring the internal, often deep-seated emotions of loneliness, an empty gut feeling, and myriads of distressing emotions to the surface; to examine these feelings and their origin which are mostly buried in the subconscious mind during childhood. Working through these unresolved memories can result in "full gut - empty mind," freeing the patient from real and misconceived ideas causing physical and mental pain, which dissipates once the instinctual needs are both met and accepted. This process is exceptionally advantageous in dealing with Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome.

The authors maintain that today's lifestyles tend to ignore inner feelings, operating on outside systems of thought. This is an extraordinary book, one that can be referred to each time a person feels that "empty gut" sensation. The solutions are laid out in simple steps throughout this phenomenal book.

Two brains are better than one!

This work is a culturally fascinating exploration of self-development--and what determines how, and why, we develop our unique sense of Self. The authors share an in-depth look into the universal feelings we all share and recognize--fear, guilt and anger--and how with self reflection we can can use this knowledge for connection and growth, leading to a better life experience for all involved. Using clinical and research studies, along with current neurological findings in the fields of medicine and biology, the book shows how the full, 'inside person' develops based upon their own gut feelings, which they use to relate with their world. "What's Behind Your Belly Button" offers a new and clear view of what it means to have communication between the gut--emotions and feelings--and the brain. An important book

This is an important book, it brings a focus to the deep value of the gut and the role that gut instinct and wisdom plays in our lives. There's a lot behind your belly button, and your life can be changed by truly understanding that. Recent neuroscience evidence has shown we have a complex, adaptive and functional neural network or 'brain' in our gut. The authors of this book describe their work and insights on this gut brain and the competencies it is involved in. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about the important distinctions of the intelligence of the gut.
