About the Author
Jean Watanabe Hee is a retired elementary teacher who taught at different schools in Hawaii for 34 years; the last 13 years were spent in teaching kindergarten at Aikahi Elementary School in Kailua. She loves teaching and substitutes whenever she can.

Born in Hilo, she was raised in Amauulu Camp I, a sugar plantation community surrounded by canefield. It no longer exists but she has wonderful happy memories of all the loving and caring people there many of whom are still in touch.

She and her husband, Don, have always lived in Kaneohe. They have two daughters and two granddaughters. Now that she is retired she often travels to Maui to babysit and help her daughter, Cheryl, and her family. Her daughter Jennifer lives and works in Atlanta, Georgia.

128 pages with wonderful mochi treat recipes.

The Hawaii's Best Mochi Recipes is a nice mochi cookbook with a lot of very good recipes. Finding a book on mochi recipes is not easy to come by. I think some good work went into this book. And, it is nice that someone was willing to make such an effort to offer their recipes on these lovely treats. The diversity of the recipes is wonderful. There are not many pictures or photos. It would have been nice to have a more step by step process with photos. Making mochi treats are not a common thing to do, so those new to it can better be served with photos especially with the end result.

You can always make adjustments to the recipes to your liking, and you can experiment on your own to create new recipes that you and your family will enjoy. Like all recipes, I think they are a guide. It starts off as a guide to teach you a method to reach a goal. After that, it is up to you and your imagination. Not everyone will like things the same way, so go for it and experiment. You will more than likely find your own new recipes that for you and your family may be better than what you have in the book.

The only thing I do not like about this book is the construction,. If it where a regular spine paperback book I would be okay with it. If it were a hardcover book, it would be wonderful. But the spiral bound books don't impress me. I know the contents are worth more than the construction of the book. But when you are buying something and paying for it, you would like it to be a nice solid constructed book physically. Spiral bound gives it an old feel to the cookbook, and kinda makes the cookbook feel cheap. If it is available in paperback or hardcover, it is a nice find.

But, the contents are well worth it. If you can look past the construction of the book, you will be happy with what you get inside.

I recommend this mochi recipe book for it's contents.

Awesome book! If you like mochi you must buy it!

The recipes in this book are easy to understand and follow. They offer many classic recipes (daifuku, dango, anko mochi, etc.) as well as many twists (strawberry mochi, etc.) I've made strawberry mochi from this book a few times for Japanese people and they love it. Fun to make fun to eat!

The increase in age-related memory impairment has produced a host of new books on preventing (or slowing) memory loss based on the latest scientific knowledge of brain and memory. In Saving Your Brain, Victoroff, director of the neurobehavioral program at Ranchos Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center, challenges the theory that Alzheimer's and similar memory disorders are abnormal responses to aging. Instead, he proposes that age-related memory loss may actually be a natural part of aging. Drawing on his clinical experiences and reviews of some 14,000 research studies, his fascinating treatise explores the evolution and function of the human brain and the many things that can damage the delicate balances that enable us to think and function. The author suggests numerous changes that can prevent memory loss and improve brain function: avoiding even minor head injuries and exposure to chemicals (including pesticides and aluminum in drinking water), increasing physical activity, eating a low-fat diet, and keeping mentally sharp with lifelong learning and other mentally challenging activities while avoiding the mind-numbing effects of television. In The Memory Bible, neuroscientist Small, director of UCLA's Memory Clinic and Center on Aging and the author of Parentcare, has compiled an amusing and informative array of self-tests, puzzles, quizzes, and other techniques to enhance memory performance. He also draws upon current scientific advancements in memory and recommends brain-saving lifestyle changes similar to Victoroff's. Small's approach is entertaining yet practical, and the numerous case histories are appealing, but some of his memory-enhancing techniques (like the "peg method" for remembering numerical sequences) seem too cumbersome to be useful. Both titles deserve a place in aging and self-help collections along with Guy McKann and Marilyn Albert's Keep Your Brain Young, which explores the relationship between brain health and physical well-being in later years. Exactly as the title states

Truly as the title suggests, THE seminal book for all lay folks on Memory improvement. It is the first in a series of similar books by Dr. Small. It is very easy to read and keeps your interest. The methods described definitely work. Dr. Small is the real deal, bonafide professor at UCLA. This is NOT an infomercial type book but highly useful without commercial representation. As many people, I have memory problems and Dr. Small's methods definite work for improvement but not perfection. They require a little practice like all skills.

A great empowering book

Dr. Gary Small describes how our lifestyle (diet, physical exercise, medicine, mental exercise, and stress) affects our mental functions and impacts how well we age. This is an empowering book offering research-based practical solutions to stay sharp. The chapter on mental aerobics offers a few fun and interesting brain exercises that can be done at home, but may feel a bit superficial in light of much recent brain research on cognitive training, meditation and neuroplasticity. I would suggest checking out The Sharp Brains Guide to Brain Fitness: 18 Interviews with Scientists, Practical Advice, and Product Reviews, to Keep Your Brain Sharps for a deeper and updated dive. If you can, do get both, since they complement each other pretty well.

About the Author
Philip J. Adler taught college courses in world history to undergraduates for almost thirty years prior to his recent retirement. Dr. Adler earned his Ph.D. at the University of Vienna following military service overseas in the 1950s. His dissertation was on the activity of the South Slav emigres during World War I, and his academic specialty was the modern history of Eastern Europe and the Austro-Hungarian empire. His research has been supported by Fulbright and the National Endowment for the Humanities grants. Dr. Adler has published widely in the historical journals of the U.S. and German-speaking Europe. He is currently professor emeritus at East Carolina University, where he spent most of his teaching career.

Randall L. Pouwels earned his B.A. in history at the University of Wisconsin and his Ph.D. in history at UCLA. His Ph.D. dissertation was on the history of Islam in East Africa. His book, HORN AND CRESCENT: CULTURAL CHANGE AND TRADITIONAL ISLAM ON THE EAST AFRICAN COAST, 800-1900 (Cambridge, 1987), has become a standard work in African history. THE HISTORY OF ISLAM IN AFRICA (Athens, Oxford, and Cape Town, 2000) was jointly edited with Nehemia Levtzion of Hebrew University, Jerusalem. Widely praised in reviews, it was selected by Choice as an Outstanding Academic Title for 2001 and was made a selection of the History Book Club. In addition, he has written numerous articles and reviews on East African history, the history of Islam in Africa, and historical methodologies. Dr. Pouwels's other research interests include the history of the Middle East, the Indian Ocean, and the history and archaeology of Native Americans. Over the years, his work has been supported by grants and fellowships from Fulbright-Hays, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Social Studies Research Council, the National Geographic Society, and the American Philosophical Society. He taught African history for over twenty years at LaTrobe University in Melbourne, Australia, and at UCLA. He has been the Professor of African and Middle Eastern History at the University of Central Arkansas since 1984.

World Civilizations

This text is meant to be the backbone reading material in a standard college-level introduction to world history. It is aimed especially at the student encountering the more exotic elements and areas of civilization for the first time, and particularly in junior and community college courses. It has been written from the beginning with such students in mind, and is uniquely equipped with pedagogic devices meant to aid these persons grasp the interrelations among world civilizations. Chapters are keyed to class lecture coverage, with strong emphasis on social and cultural trends and events. Proportionately more space is given to nonwestern peoples than any other text on the market.

Adler's World Civilizations is an excellent introductory survey text. The language is pleasant without being banal. Most importantly the text gives attention to a worldview that shows history globally instead of through the Western tinted glasses our texts in High school usually did.

Great for a general reference of history and geography.

I picked this up at a library used book sale of donated items. I paid zero for it as it was used and not many people want these large textbooks around the house.

But after paging through the book it really is very nicely arranged with chapters very logically presented with enough, but not an overwhelming amount of of text to slog through until the next heading appears. I find it very appealing visually with a great balance of maps (nice ones), photos and side panels. This is a book I would have considered keeping after using it in a class.

Sometimes its just nice to reach for a book to read about some battle or treaty or geographic region without using the internet to learn something.

In my case, it will be used for filling in historical periods which I might be curious about. It would be worth a few dollars but I can't say more than $20 for a reference work.

His primary job responsibilities include secure access and ISE deployments, solution enhancements, futures, and escalations. Aaron joined Cisco in 2005 and is currently a member of numerous security advisory boards. Prior to joining Cisco, he spent 12 years as a consultant and technical trainer. His areas of expertise include network and host security architecture and implementation, regulatory compliance, and routing and switching. Aaron is the author of many white papers and design guides, including the TrustSec 2.0 Design and Implementation Guide and the NAC Layer 3 OOB Using VRFs for Traffic Isolation design guide. He is also a distinguished speaker at Cisco Live for topics related to identity and is a security columnist for Network World , where he blogs on all things related to identity. Demystifying ISE

If you have ever tried to deploy Cisco Identity Services Engine you know and understand there are a lot of components that can play into the mix which will complicate things. Getting devices on the network safely, securely, and easily is hard to do. ISE allows you to meet those goals, but the setup and maintaining of ISE are not straight forward. If you have ever heard Aaron Woland speak at Cisco Live or other events you can feel his passion for helping others deploy ISE. In this book Aaron brings that passion and energy by creating the manual that should be shipped with every copy of ISE sold. The first couple of chapters explain the business need/desire for ISE but from then on it's all hands on technical configuration. If you are deploying currently or thinking of deploying ISE 1.2 you need to pick up this book. If you are upgrading from an existing ISE 1.1 you really need to pick up this book as best practices have changed from 1.1 to 1.2.

Well organized and informative

I picked up this volume at a Security User Group meeting, partly attracted by BYOD in the title. But what I really ended up learning about is the Cisco Identity Services Engine (ISE). And while BYOD is a huge current trend, supporting secure BYOD access is only a portion of the overall ISE architecture and capabilities.
I am impressed by how well the book organized and quite interesting to read, especially for volume that’s basically describing a product. After a historical overview and a refresher on network access control in Section I, followed by an overview of the major components, deployment options, and various ISE specs in Section II, authors pull no punches in Section III that for an ISE deployment to be successful and effective, defining the Network Access Security Policy and getting senior-level sponsorship for ISE deployment is a must. And that’s hard work. Checklists provided in that section are helpful. Another great advice from the authors: phased deployment, beginning with the monitor mode that allows for auditing of what would fail without initially denying access.
Section IV, the largest out of seven comprising this work, has many insightful chapters on ISE configuration, but I found portions of it very hard to get through. Some of the ISE screenshots (not all) literally require a magnifying glass to read, and that’s for a 20/20 vision. Try looking at figures 9-24, 11-2, or 14-18, for example, and see what you can decipher. But that’s a relatively small price to pay in the overall context of a highly instructive security publication, and that not just in terms of the ISE product itself but of security principles as well. Last three sections on Best Practices, Advanced Features, and Troubleshooting, along with more good stuff in the Appendices wrap up this informative volume. Hence, even with a bit of annoyance for some unreadable screenshots, I am still giving it the highest rating.

A classic in its kind

I have followed the three editions of this book from the positions of resident in Neurophysiology (edition 1981), "young specialist" in the field (edition 1993) and finally a consultant with some experience. Still it is a pleasure for me to read this book because of its very clear and logical approach. It will teach you to describe an EEG event, then to classify it, then to come to its diagnostic implications... Quite valuable for practicing EEGers. At the same time it gives you in concise form a lot of information you may fail to find even in a reference text. And there is the one author - one style advantage.

About the Author

Stephen Majewicz received his PhD in mathematics at the CUNY Graduate Center and is currently an associate professor of mathematics at Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn, New York. He began teaching mathematics in 1990 at the age of 19 as a teaching assistant at SUNY Stonybrook, and has been teaching math ever since.
