About the Author
Rebecca A. Ottesen first learned SAS as a student at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, where she now teaches for the Statistics Department. As a Biostatistician for the City of Hope, Rebecca uses every opportunity to incorporate her research and programming experience into the coursework for her Cal Poly students. Lora D. Delwiche enjoys teaching people about SAS software and likes solving challenging problems using SAS. She has spent most of her career at the University of California, Davis, using SAS in support of teaching and research. Susan J. Slaughter discovered SAS software in graduate school at North Carolina State University. Since then, she has used SAS in a variety of business and academic settings managing large databases, teaching SAS software classes, and helping other SAS programmers. She now works as a consultant through her company, Avocet Solutions.

There are no solutions for the programming exercices, only 'hints'. I bought this book to prepare for an exam, but it won't be helpful at all. Really disappointed that I spent $15.91 on it :(.

About the Author
Joan L. Slonczewski received her BA from Bryn Mawr College and her PhD in molecular biophysics and biochemistry from Yale University, where she studied bacterial motility with Robert M. Macnab. After postdoctoral work at the University of Pennsylvania, she has since taught undergraduate microbiology in the Department of Biology at Kenyon College, where she earned a Silver Medal in the National Professor of the Year program of the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education. She has published numerous research articles with undergraduate coauthors on bacterial pH regulation and has published six science fiction novels, including A Door into Ocean and The Highest Frontier, both of which earned the John W. Campbell Memorial Award. She served as At-Large Member representing Divisions on the Council Policy Committee of the American Society for Microbiology and as a member of the editorial board of the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology.

John W. Foster received his BS from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science (now the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia) and his PhD from Hahnemann University (now Drexel University School of Medicine), also in Philadelphia, where he worked with Albert G. Moat. After postdoctoral work at Georgetown University, he joined the Marshall University School of Medicine in West Virginia. He is currently teaching in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine in Mobile, Alabama. Dr. Foster has coauthored three editions of the textbook Microbial Physiology and has published more than 100 journal articles describing the physiology and genetics of microbial stress responses. He has served as Chair of the Microbial Physiology and Metabolism division of the American Society for Microbiology and as a member of the editorial advisory board of the journal Molecular Microbiology.

Excellent Textbook

If you've forgotten most of intro to biology and genetics this book is great for you. It gives you all the background information you need to understand the subject. The figures in the book are well illustrated and help you imagine what's really going on.
I'd recommend this book to anyone taking a microbiology class. It's a good read!

Great alternative to the much more expensive hard cover available in most bookstores!

This book can be a little dense and excessively wordy, and it doesn't delve as deeply into the medical implications as much as I would've hoped. However, as an alternative to the required text book for the school, it's great. (Because it's so much cheaper!) You should probably know that although it's a soft cover, it's not got holes to be able to put it in a three binder like some other soft cover books. Also, it's the international student edition, so trying to sell back to the school will probably not be a success. Still, you can always just sell it back to Amazon!

About the Author
Edward A. Dennis is Distinguished Professor and former Chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and Professor in the Department of Pharmacology in the School of Medicine at the University of California, San Diego. He is also Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Lipid Research.

Ralph A. Bradshaw is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Physiology and biophysics at the University of California, Irvine. Prior to that he was on the faculty of the Department of Biological Chemistry, Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO and was Professor and Chair of the Department of Biological Chemistry at the University of California, Irvine. From 2006 to 2015, he was a member of the Mass Spectrometry Facility and Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of California, San Francisco. He holds degrees from Colby College and Duke University and was a post-doctoral fellow at Indiana University and the University of Washington. He has served as president for FASEB, was the founding president of the Protein Society and was the treasurer of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. His research has focused on protein chemistry and proteomics, with emphasis on the structure and function of growth factors and their receptors, particularly nerve growth factor and fibroblast growth factor, and the involvement of receptor tyrosine kinases in cell signalling. He has also studied in the role of proteolytic processing and N-terminal modification in protein stability and turnover.

I Saw Her That Night, a love story in time of war, is a novel about a few years in the life and mysterious disappearance of Veronika Zarnik, a young bourgeois woman from Ljubljana, sucked into the whirlwind of a turbulent period in history. We follow her story from the perspective of five different characters, who also talk about themselves, as well as the troubled Slovenian times before and during World War II; times that swallowed, like a Moloch, not only the people of various beliefs involved in historical events, but also those who lived on the fringes of tumultuous events, which they did not even fully comprehend―they only wanted to live. About the Author
Drago Jancar was born in 1948 in Maribor, Slovenia, and is one of the best-known Slovenian writers at home and abroad. After studying law, he worked as a journalist, editor, and a freelance writer, and traveled to both the US and Germany. As President of the Slovenian P.E.N. Centre (1987 – 1991), Jancar was engaged in the rise of democracy in Slovenia and Yugoslavia and has been described as “the seismologist of a chaotic history.” I Saw Her That Night won the Best Foreign Book Prize (Prix du meilleur livre etranger) in 2014 and the Kresnik Award for best novel of the year. In 2011 he was awarded the European Prize for Literature. His novels and short stories have been translated in several languages and his plays have been produced on many on American stages. He now lives in Ljubljana.

Michael Biggins's translations of works by Slovene authors such as Drago Jancar, Tomaz Salamun, Vladimir Bartol and Lojze Kovacic have been published by Harcourt, Archipelago and Dalkey Archive, among others. In 2015 he was awarded the Lavrin Diploma of the Society of Slovene Literary Translators for distinguished contributions to the advancement of Slovene literature in English. He lives in Seattle.

A literary masterpiece

It took me quite a while to track down a copy of "I Saw Her That Night" and I can say that the effort was rewarded multiple times. Drago Jancar's sparse prose draws you straight into his cleverly constructive narrative in a whirlpool of action and emotion, spinning you round and round as you are drawn powerfully, faster and faster, into discovering what happened on the fateful night in question. The characters are quickly but memorably drawn as cumulatively the pieces of this tragic tale are added together. In one short book, Jancar packs in romance, conspiracy, confusion, betrayal and discovery for a rich, addictive and moving reading experience that captures as completely as it is possible for one book to do, the full tragedy of Yugoslavia during World War II. Not a word is wasted as the threads finally pull together into a true literary masterpiece.

No words can describe the Nonsense of war as brilliant as Jancar's. Seeing truth through many different views makes one really think,... About time of WW2, about things that happened right after it, about today and tomorrow.
