Great for improving your craft

This is a new book containing old information about the correct way to make embroidrey stitches. I think it is a great book. It is a little difficult to read, but only because embroidery is such a visual and hands-on activity. I love how it goes into specific details as to how to make variations of different stitches. The pictures are black and white. The reading and examples of stitches are fairly easy to follow if you study the information and have some experience with embroidery. I do not have a lot of experience, I've done it off and on all my life (49 years); this book has made my work better quality and more attractive. I feel like I know what I'm doing, so I'm not embarrassed for others to look at.

I smile when I see this described as a new book: published in 1900

This book is 115 years old. The reason it's still so fresh is that it both gets down to the basics and does something hardly any other needlework book has done since: it shows what the stitchery looks like from the back side. Beyond how the stitches strike your eye, you know you're doing it right if you can replicated the back...you can see how to start and finish off threads too.

It is a 262 page book with a very nice index, Table of Contents and fully Descriptive List of Illustrations which number 94. These are all PHOTOGRAPHS of finished embroideries which are superb; the additional line-drawings of the stitch diagrams are not included among the 94 photos. And "descriptive" means explaining everything in the photo from the fabric to the fibers to the image of the embroidery (i.e. what the project is) to all the stitches to the era and culture it's from to where it was located at the time of publication in 1900. With the exception that they're b&w, just these photos are remarkable...and color printing was simply not available a century ago. The majority of pictured embroideries were in the possession of "Mrs. Lewis F. Day" or at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.

There are 30 chapters most of which cover specific techniques including stitches of canvaswork, chain, herring-bone, feather and oriental, ropes and knots, satin, darning, laid-work, couching--including goldwork--applique, cut-work, quilting and raised work. Then outlining, shading, creating figures and religious needlework are covered. Such detail: there is a several-page discussion of which way stitches should lie based on the effect you're trying for. I make a rough count of about a hundred stitches that are extremely well laid out. The final chapter is the 5-page A Word To The Worker which is guidelines as applicable and accessibly written as anything published within the last couple years. Compared to the 800 or so needlework books in my library.

One thing to know: when the authors titled this book, they were serious: the very last paragraph in this book challenges us:

"One last word as to thoroughness in needlework. Those who have really not time to do much, should be satisfied with simple work. The desire to make a great show with little work is a snare. Ladies make protest always, "There is too much work in that." Well, if they are not prepared to work, they may as well give themselves up to their play. There was no labour shirked in the old work illustrated in these pages; and nothing much worth doing was ever done without work, hard work, and plenty of it. Should that thought frighten folk away, they may as well be scared off at once. Art can do very well without them."

Each title presents information about daily living from ancient times to the present, explaining the need for improvements and how a given invention changed the quality of life for the better. The text, printed on a sea-foam green background, is breezy but informative; unfamiliar terms are defined. Illustrations are a mixture of period black-and-white and color photos. An illustrated time line runs along the bottom of the pages. Each volume concludes with an epilogue and another time line. Frankfurt, one of the world's most influential moral philosophers, attempts to build such a theory here. With his characteristic combination of philosophical acuity, psychological insight, and wry humor, Frankfurt proceeds by exploring how bullshit and the related concept of humbug are distinct from lying. He argues that bullshitters misrepresent themselves to their audience not as liars do, that is, by deliberately making false claims about what is true. In fact, bullshit need not be untrue at all.

Rather, bullshitters seek to convey a certain impression of themselves without being concerned about whether anything at all is true. They quietly change the rules governing their end of the conversation so that claims about truth and falsity are irrelevant. Frankfurt concludes that although bullshit can take many innocent forms, excessive indulgence in it can eventually undermine the practitioner's capacity to tell the truth in a way that lying does not. Liars at least acknowledge that it matters what is true. By virtue of this, Frankfurt writes, bullshit is a greater enemy of the truth than lies are.

Short and Sweet

I got this book after seeing Prof. Frankfurt on the Daily Show with John Stewart. Having a bachelors degree in philosophy I was intrigued. Here are some of my observations:

1) This book is not traditionally funny. If you are looking for a joke book get one, this is a work of philosophy and as such has a degree of intellectual humor. Some of the observations and comments are funny but overall this is not a joke book, rather it is designed with a specific philosophical purpose... (he's an "ivy league" Philosophy Professor and published by Princeton)

2) Very short but to the point. I read the whole book in less than an hour. That being said there is a lot of content which deserves meaningful reflection... its one of those books that you will probably end up going "ahhh haaa" at least at one point.

3) Inexpensive. Its under ten bucks... some may say that its pricey for such a small book but if you enjoy it, whose to say what the intrinsic value will be to you down the road.

4) Warning... this is not the most complex or even dense piece of philosophy. Certainly its not like reading Hegel or another "headache philosopher" but this is a work of philosphy. As long as you know that going into this there should be no problems. A friend of mine read this book thinking it would be comical and fun, almost expecting jokes and punch-lines... he was disappointed.

I depends on what you were expecting.

I confess that when I bought this book, I expected it to be a sort of quasi-satiric send-up of bulls**t. Then by about p. 10, I began thinking it was a really serious scholarly treatment of the subject. (I mean after all - a professor emeritus of moral philosophy at Princeton?) But as I got further into it, and after reading about 20 of the 140 reviews of the book on Amazon (how many books get 140 reviews?), I began to get the picture. It is indeed a humorous book--not a quasi-satiric har-har kind of joke book, but a very dry sort of academic humor. In fact, I believe it's an academic put-on--in fact, bulls**t about bulls**t. It is highly self-referential in the sense that a great deal of what it says about bulls**t is applicable to the book itself.

Most of the reviewers who figured this out gave it a low rating because they felt they had been conned by the catchy title and resented paying ten dollars for what is little more than a short essay conflated into a publishable format. In some cases, there might have been some degree of humor-impairment involved, but in most, I think it was simply disappointment and the feeling of having been cheated. But I think that misses the point of academic put-ons.

We hardly need to be told that there's a lot of bulls**t in today's culture, but I think it's relevant here to note that a lot of it is found in scholarly literature that sounds like bulls**t to anyone not privy to the particular discipline it is targeted to, but is sincerely meant to be taken seriously by its authors. (Frankfurt's last sentence, tellingly, is, "sincerity itself is bulls**t.") This can lead to fairly serious issues about misrepresentation, which is one of the central elements in Frankfurt's definition of bulls**t. If one perceives a work like this as intending to be taken seriously, then one has a right to feel that it has misrepresented itself and to be pretty disgusted at being taken in. But if one perceives it as a put-on and appreciates it on that level, then misrepresentation is not a problem.

A more serious example is known by the name of the Sokal Affair (see the Wikipedia article under that title). In this case (quoting from that article): "[Alan] Sokal, a professor of physics at New York University, submitted a pseudoscientific paper for publication in a postmodern cultural studies journal, as an experiment to see if a humanities journal would, in Sokal's words, `publish an article liberally salted with nonsense if (a) it sounded good and (b) it flattered the editors' ideological preconceptions' " There was a great brouhaha over all this because the journal felt Sokal had misrepresented his article as a piece of serious scholarship, and Sokal felt that anyone with good sense should have been able to tell it was bulls**t. Frankfurt's book may suffer from some of this ambiguity, and it may not be worth ten dollars (and certainly won't cause a major brouhaha), but if you can swallow the cost and appreciate the rather peculiar sort of humor involved, you may find it worthwhile.

Provocative Title Reveals Topic Worthy of Deeper Discussion

Professor Harry Frankfurt has come up with a compact winner with this provocatively titled tome, all of eighty pages, about a subject around which we all seem to have a vast amount of experience. As a professional philosopher who has earned emeritus status at Princeton University, he surely must be a master at this topic and sets about to prove it by discussing it with irony, broad humor and a cheekiness that ultimately brings a certain seriousness to his work. He is especially effective in portraying the mental improvisation we go through when asked unexpected questions that require thoughtfulness. Whether it is within the context of a political opinion or literary analysis, the very act he discusses actually provides great motivation for someone to learn more about what he or she is saying.

What Frankfurt does is take his analysis several steps further by saying his subject, if left unaddressed, will lead to such an altered perception of reality that we will not know what reality is. His argument about his subject as an indictment has merit, though at times, he seems to be carried away with his own rhapsodizing, rather ironic given the topic. According to the author, the very lack of sincerity in some schools of thought, epitomized by the rise of Nazism, for example, has led to a retreat from the ideal of correctness. I would have never thought of Nazism as the result of common BS, but Frankfurt makes this thinking seem entirely logical and that indeed it is a bigger threat than the outright lie. But he does not dwell on the delivery of such a message, as BS is more easily detectable than a lie, at least from most perspectives. A master at this topic fakes opinions with finesse, but he or she does not necessarily get things wrong. That is exactly the threat described perceptively by the author as "a lack of connection to a concern with truth". In essence, the search for truth becomes a moot point when there is no concern in finding it. I applaud Frankfurt for his audacious and attentive little book, as it reflects a fertile mind taking on a subject we all know intimately but rarely take so seriously. Highly recommended commuter reading.

The energy of unconditional love that emanates from this book is blowing me away... I'm amazed by Mia's discipline to stay connected with her man, to constantly create a game with him to keep the marriage alive and exciting, and to stay light and open-hearted when in communication with him.
Being in harmony with men is totally possible once the woman understands the different types of men with compassion and the grip that mythology has on her, she can be wiser in choosing a mate, and she can devise a strategy to keep the relationship fruitful and harmonious.
This book offers so much hope to couples and to single women... I highly recommend it!!!

It has truly changed my whole perspective and my interactions with the men in my life. I've shifted to a whole new level, a level I didn't even know was there. In the biographies of these ladies, the author preserved for the reader insight into an exceptional literary environment and multilingual ethnic culture of Prague, Bohemia, Moravia.

These nurturing traditions, descimated by the ugly jack boot events of 1939, disappeared entirely with the ethnic-cleansing of the Shoah, and became eradicated with the 1945 expulsion and mass murder of the centuries-old indigenous German-speaking population.

The book presents a fine compliment to the short work by HG Adler, Die Dichtung der Prager Schule, published by the Arco Verlag (arco-verlag.com).

Life is Beautiful

Let me start this review by saying that this book came at exactly the time I needed it in my life, so it’s score of 5 of 5 stars is no surprise.

Mandy (the author) is a single young woman who stepped out in faith to minister to other single ladies by sharing her life story with the world. In a beautifully compelling, tear-jerking way, she shares her heart on falling in love with Jesus.

Through short essays, we learn about the struggle of letting go of loves past and looking forward to loves future. Mandy shares her greatest heartbreak, a man who begged the question: Was I your option while you were my choice?

And this is where it struck a chord in my own story. You’ve all heard by now that I was in an on again, off again, untitled relationship that recently came to a final end after several years. I’ve been dealing with a lot of confusion over the entirety of that relationship: Was I really in love (I was)? Did he love me (in his own way, I suppose he did)? Why didn’t he fight for me? Was I right to give up (I was, I firmly believe it)? Why did I let myself become so attached to such heartache?

As Mandy shared her story of healing, I found her words nourishing healing in my own heart and soul as well. The similarities in our struggles was almost scary at first, but as I let her speak to my heart, I felt the love of Jesus washing away every last ounce of hurt.

Just as her Mr. E came into her life to teach her total and consistent reliance on Christ, I believe the same of my own love story past.

This book has left me breathless, sobbing, challenged, inspired and feeling courageous. Vulnerable is a good thing. Heartbreak is a good thing. It all leads to total and consistent reliance on the Lord. And there is no one safer to rely on.

I plan to hold onto my copy for many years to come and mark it up with thoughts over the many rereads that will surely take place, especially when undergoing the painful growth of breakups.

Absolutely love this book!

In Beautiful Uncertainty, Mandy Hale invites us on a personal journey filled with twists and turns, surprises, heartache, frustrations, and incredible joy. I laughed, cried, and clung to Mandy's words, whispering, "Me too. Oh girl, me too." You know what I love about Mandy's journey? She's embracing becoming the woman God made her to be with every fiber in her being—she's embracing the beautiful uncertainty of not knowing what's next and being okay with that, and she's inviting us to do the same. That may be one of the most powerful things we can offer those around us today—unmasking our insecurities, doubts, frustrations, worries and questions, and inviting others to raise their hand and join us, providing the space and freedom for each of us to step into the beautiful journey of becoming who God made us to be.
