paranormal time traveling romance

Johnny Doesn't Drink Champagne is a YA time traveling novel complete with vampires. Author Cody Young delivers a delightful tale set in London's present day and the year 1483. This was an enchanting, suspenseful, romantic tale that had me turning the pages to race to its conclusion. I liked the combination of historical information and fiction. I became completely immersed in the time period.

The tale is told from the POV of protagonist seventeen year old Madison Lambourne. Madison is traveling with her senior class to London. She meets Johnny DeVere at the Heathrow airport. Johnny calls her Madeline and appears to know her. She finds a torn note that falls from his pocket. It is written on old paper and says, "In time you will forgive me. I will be waiting for you at..." The handwriting is hers. This encounter will test all that Madison knows and prove her braver then even she imagined.

The story centers on the Tower of London, past tragedies and the keepers of the River of Time. Madison and Johnny travel back in time, to right wrongs and protect the river of time. The romance between Johnny and Madison is sweet, romantic and youthful. Madison is independent and takes charge, sometimes at her own peril. Johnny is dark, world-wise and obviously taken with Madison.

I have to mention the cover. I am not a fan, and feel it doesn't do the wonderful tale that lies within justice. I would have liked to have seen Madison running from the Tower in the lovely period dress she wore or the image of Johnny(as seen on author's website) in black and white. The old adage "never judge a book by its cover" applies here. I would have walked right by this novel. I am so guilty of being drawn to a book by its cover and then reading the synopsis.

Johnny Doesn't Drink Champagne was a charming novel. The plot was captivating and an effortless read. Young skillfully took us from past to present, while slowly giving us clues to the past relationship between Madison and Johnny. Some of the characters were humorous, especially the school chaperone.

I recommend this to fans of historical fiction and YA paranormal romance. Johnny Doesn't Drink Champagne is available in eBook and paperback forms. I look forward to reading the next book in this series. Cody Young's other published works include, The Lady and the Locksmith, Scandal at the Farmhouse, and American Smile.

A historical adventure of epic proportion

Madison was transported back in time after following a mysterious figure that she recognises but cannot remember, whilst on a visit to the Tower of London.

A historical adventure of epic proportion which describes the medieval period perfectly, with the fear of the tower and many people living in poverty, through the book you can sense the smells and fears in London 1483.

On the journey our heroine discovers the full facts of the mysterious (and must say very good looking) figure Johnny De Vere and the secrets of how he has kept his tender age of 21. Also discovering the king has locked up his two illegitimate sons to be executed. Madison is horrified, can she save them? Will Johnny help her as he is "the guardian of the river of time" which preserves history as it is.

A story for both male and female readers, the adventures, historical facts and of course romance will keep the reader wanting to turn the pages. There is not many stories that I did not want to end but this was one!

Not really a plus side to this one...

This book was written in what I call first person descriptive... a second by second play of the main characters' life, frankly I don't need to read their every movement, thought or moment...it makes for tedious reading...get on with the story. Another thing bogging the story down was the so called relationship between the two mains - Maddie and Johnny...again, a lot of nonsense to weed through to get the the main story line. I did finish this book but to be honest I am not sure why and I won't be reading book 2.

Country Life Meets City Lawyer and Wins!
From the first sentence through the last word you will be enthralled with this book. While Mrs. City gladly greets country life and indeed blossoms, Mister City fights it every step of the way. The book isn't just about the gradual love affair with the country it is also about marriage and how to be a great neighbor. Pigs in Clover offers you important life lessons - like putting your partner's needs ahead of your own, or how it is okay to let others help you in times of need! You will cry real tears on some pages and laugh aloud on others. You will find yourself rooting for the Mister and smiling with joy when he realizes where his happiness is to be found - inside himself in the country. I am hopeful there will be a book 2 because I am anxious to find out what has transpired after the book ended. Enjoy! Book Review: Pigs in Clover

Pigs in Clover is the hilarious tale of Simon Dawson and his wife, Debbie, who decide to move to the country and be almost totally self-sufficient on their small farm in Devon, England. Prior to their life as small-time farmers they lived in London and worked as a real estate agent (Simon) and an attorney (Debbie).

This book was so wonderful, it was a truly enjoyable read. I can really not even write a long review about it because there was really nothing that I didn't like. I loved reading about country life and their struggles. Simon's relationship with his animals was definitely entertaining and I loved the parts with their friend Ziggy. This was a wonderfully entertaining memoir. Never a boring moment. Sometimes it was funny, sometimes it was stressful, sometimes it was sad, Simon did a great job of making the reader feel the emotion right through the pages as if they were right there on the smallholding with him. No matter what was happening in the book, the atmosphere remained light and chatty. This is a great pleasure read and I am giving it 5 out of 5 stars.

About the Author
RUSS McDONALD (Ph.D., University of Pennsylvania) is the editor of four plays in the revised Pelican series of Shakespeare's plays and the author of Shakespeare Reread (1994), Shakespeare and Jonson/Jonson and Shakespeare (1988), and numerous articles on early modern theater, comedy, and opera. A celebrated teacher, McDonald has taught at Mississippi State University, the University of Hawaii, and the University of Rochester. He has been actively involved with the NEH-sponsored Teaching Shakespeare Institute at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C., and he has also served as resident scholar, head scholar, and institute director of Teaching Shakespeare's Language.

Excellent and Informative

Russ McDonald is not someone many people have heard of, unless you happen to live in the world of Shakespeare scholars, in which case, I would be surprised if you have not. Mr. McDonald was for a long time associated with the Folger Library, and has edited numerous volumes of the Penguin Shakespeare editions, among other credentials. I have had the good fortune to be in one of his classes, and I can think of no one else I have ever met that has so much love and appreciation for Shakespeare's genius, while simultaneously being able to pass that to his students. I honestly don't think there is anything this man *doesn't* know about Shakespeare.
That being said, The Bedford Companion is less about The Bard, and more so about the times in which he lived. While attention is given to his plays, equal attention is given to such things as the history of the Globe Theater, Shakespeare's early life, the economic situations of the time, and a history of Shakespeare appreciation, or "Bardolatry". It shows Shakespeare as a human, as a buisinessman, a family man, and how he eventually become know as the greatest writer in the English language. (Most of his plays weren't published until after his death.) This book may not help you fully understand Hamlet, but it can certainly make it more interesting.

An excellent teacher resource

The original documents pertaining to Shakeseare's life and works is an excellent teacher resource. The text of his will, excerpts of newspaper accounts that sparked The Tempest and the DeWitt drawing of the Globe made our studies of Shakesperae more concrete.As a loyal fan of Shakespeare, I enjoyed the reading. I think the text is a little dry for most.

A Must Read for Any and All Interested in Shakespeare

This book is a great overview of all things Shakespeare. It intorduces the man himself, the language of the works, the culture of the Elizabethans and the theatre, sosurces, and basic scholarly criticism and ideas. A wonderful foundational text with primary documents which greatly enhance the reading and give the subject a new life.

Excellent Book -- Not Widely Known in America

Iain Crichton Smith is a Scottish poet, dramatist, and novelist whom I had never heard of until I saw a reference to this book on a Scottish website and ordered it. It is a short work (only 160 pages) and written in a simple style that is highly effective.
The story is about an elderly woman who, at the beginning of the novel, is informed that she is to be removed from her cottage in the Scottish Highlands and resettled along the coast with other villagers. This is the time of the Highland Clearances and the Duke of Sutherland, like other landowners of that period, wants the villages on his land razed so he can more profitably raise sheep. This was a dark time in Scottish history and many of those relocated to the coast died of starvation and illness. Despite the historical context, however, this is not a novel about the Highland Clearances. It is character study of an elderly woman, Mrs. Scott, and how she begins to change over the period of two weeks before the villagers are to be turned out of their homes. Her husband died many years before and her son has immigrated to Canada. Religion is her sole consolation. Her thoughts are the mechanism that move the story forward--flashbacks to the past and considerations of the present. The imagery is often beautiful. I don't want to say too much about what is uncovered through this device or it might ruin the story for you. It is a compelling read, though. I started the book at 10 p.m. on a week day, thinking I would read the first chapter or two before bed, and read through chapter 8. I regretfully stopped because I got too sleepy to continue. I finished it the next day. I plan to read more of Crichton Smith's work. This is a beautiful book that should be better known here.

Study of the human heart -- as well as great history of Highland Clearances

I got this book because I wanted to learn about the Highland Clearances in Scotland between 1790 and 1850, in which untold numbers of crofters were displaced from the land. This, according to web reviews, was the definitive novel on the period. I found it to be fascinating, both as history and as literature.

The book is told by a 70-year-old widow who is being forced from her home, where she was born, and generations before her had been born. The voice is a simple one, at times confused and rambling. At first, I was put off by the extreme negativity of her character, and her general bitterness towards life (even before the notification of being displaced). She had led a really hard life.

As the introduction to the book points out, however, the fact of her joylessness is really one of the main points of the book. For the author is writing about the effect of religion on the Scots people just as much as about the Clearances. He paints a picture of a church that has warped the souls of the people, making them live in guilt and fear of hell, begrudging them even the simplest of pleasures such as a little music on a Saturday night. The greedy landlords and their agents are certainly portrayed as villains. But an even greater villain is the church, which actually goes so far as to say that the people are being evicted as punishment from God for their sinfulness.

What makes this a memorable book is the gradual change of heart in the old woman, where she sees how she was at fault in many of the tragedies in her family relationships -- yet was a victim in other circumstances, which previously she had taken for granted. This gives the book a richness and depth, rather than being just a social commentary. We see a poorly educated woman gaining clarity on a social situation, and shifting her prior attitudes -- a wonderful sign of growth despite the dire circumstances she is in.

Upon concluding the book, you can't help but ask similar questions about our current times. How are we victims of, or passive witnesses to, terrible iniquities in our own era? And how have we been blinded to ways in which our own attitudes have led to the demise of valued relationships?

Delivery was faster than I thought it would be. I really can't understand why this book has never been published in the United States. It's an engrossing read which I would have no hesitation in recommending to anyone. My copy is now doing the rounds
