The Life and Legacy of Annie Oakley (Oklahoma Western Biographies), by Glenda Riley

With a widowed mother and six siblings, Annie Oakley first became a trapper, hunter, and sharpshooter simply to put food on the table. Yet her genius with the gun eventually led to her stardom in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show during the latter half of the nineteenth century. The archetypal western woman, Annie Oakley urged women to take up shooting to procure food, protect themselves, and enjoy healthy exercise, yet she was also the proper Victorian lady, demurely dressed and skeptical about the value of women’s suffrage. Glenda Riley presents the first interpretive biography of the complex woman who was Annie Oakley.

From Library Journal
Those who know of Annie Oakley largely through film and theater portrayals by Barbara Stanwyck, Ethel Merman, or Betty Hutton will find a more nuanced and complete biography of "Little Sure Shot" (as Chief Sitting Bull called her) at the hands of Riley. Author of Western studies such as A Place To Grow: Women in the American West (Harlan Davidson, 1992), the author here provides not only a biography of Oakley but also an evaluation of her legend and influence-a woman who sought economic equality and recognition for women in a male-dominated profession, but who, as a proper Victorian lady, opposed suffrage for women. Riley's is the latest and most scholarly in a long line of biographies, including Shirl Kasper's excellent study, Annie Oakley (LJ 3/15/92).

From Booklist
To provide a factual and intimate biography of Annie Oakley, the legendary female sharpshooter and star of Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Show, Riley attempts to place her seemingly mythical subject firmly into historical, cultural, and sociological contexts. While faithfully recounting Oakley's personal and professional chronology and impressive list of accomplishments, the author also offers an interpretive view of Annie's highly successful effort to reconcile her public image as a resourceful and athletic western woman with her private perception of herself as a genteel Victorian lady and a model wife. What emerges is a multidimensional portrait of an entertainer and a businesswoman whose enduring fame and popularity both reflected and defied the conventions of her era. Unlike many previous Oakley biographers, Riley moves well beyond the realm of folklore, producing an insightful and original account of the life, the times, and the significance of a uniquely American heroine. Academically Solid!
By A Customer
I've read many spurious versions of Annie Oakley's life. Now I don't have to read another, because I've seen the real story as documented by Riley. Her scholarship is outstanding, and she analyses Oakley's role as symbol of the showbiz Western myth as well as her quiet, hardworking life behind the scenes. If you like the dramatic lies, this book is not for you. If you want a portrait of Oakley as a woman and a symbol, read this.

An excellent concise reference
By Flame_926
This was one of the sources that I used for my college term paper. Glenda Riley is concise and simple in her explanations; she does not "wander" in explaining and includes an extensive index which makes this an invaluable scholastic reference. I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to quickly sort out the fact from the ficition of Annie Oakley.

Heavy on the Feminism
By Judith C. Kinney
The facts in this book seem complete and accurate. We learn that Annie Oakley did not deliberately lose a shooting match to Frank Butler as she did in "Annie Get Your Gun," a product of the unfeminist fifties.
The information on the trials of Oakley's early life was especially interesting. I felt the book bogged down when the author began trying to fit Oakley into a feminist straitjacket, relating everything she did and didn't do to its connection with women's rights. I also grew tired of hearing how sweet, feminine, and ladylike Oakley was.

A fairy tale with modern twist
By J. F. Kaufmann
The Scarlett Mark
Intertwining her novel’s plot with several distinctive threads – Norse mythology, folk tales and early medieval Christianity – Shelley Kassian creates a colorful tapestry: a story of a cursed nobleman and exiled princess, of dark and light, good and evil; a tale in which many things are not as they seem at the first glance.
Set in pseudo-medieval times, The Scarlet Mark is the first installment of the envisioned Odin Saga. The story is told from the limited point of view of the various characters, who move the plot forward taking turns in narrating it. From the main protagonists, Princess Scarlett and Lord Nicolai, to the evil queen-sorceress Cynara and Nicolai’s butler, to King Rickard and his first queen, Regana – everyone gets a chance to tell a part of the story, making it more intimate and adding to its dynamic.
The Scarlett Mark uses the familiar elements of some of the best-known folktales, thus establishing a connection with the readers. Cynara’s dramatic appearance in the middle of the wedding celebration immediately brings into mind the evil fairy from Sleeping Beauty; like Snow White’s stepmother, she sends Scarlett to her almost certain death; she curses a man into a beast … Not unlike the terrifying and gruesome early versions of fairytales, The Scarlet Mark is a dark story. The only light in this darkness is the courage and determination of a young girl.
The sharp contrast between the main characters and their almost reverse roles give this ‘medieval romantasy’ quite a contemporary flavor. Instead of a helpless princess, we have one who fights her own battles; instead of a knight in shining armor, we have more or less helpless middle-aged man. Princess Scarlet is young, selfless and inexperienced, but clever and feisty, therefore the perfect counterbalance to the much older, cold, and self-centered Lord Nicolai. Even before his former lover, Cynara, cursed him, Nicolai was a prisoner of his own arrogance and there was darkness in his heart. Scarlett’s heart is pure and innocent. Nicolai gives up and accepts his grim fate. Scarlett doesn’t; instead she tries the impossible - to free both Lord Nicolai and herself form her evil stepmother and Nicolai’s former lover, Cynara.
Being the first book in the series, The Scarlet Mark inevitably leaves some loose ties (the relationship between Scarlett and Nicolai), some stories unfinished (Scarlett’s mystical connection to the principal Norse deity, Odin) and some only touched upon (the stories of Scarlett’s mother, father, sisters, stepbrother; Nicolai’s bride Lady Alexandra).
But the tale leaves Princess Scarlett and Lord Nicolai changed – her more mature and stronger, him a better man, open for a more meaningful future – and ready for new adventures.
And it leaves readers waiting to hear more about them.

Entertaining book
By A.M. Westerling
The Scarlett Mark is the story of Princess Scarlett, banished by her stepmother the witch Cynara to the castle of the mysterious Lord Nicolai. Cynara has cursed Lord Nicolai, transforming him into a black panther yet Scarlett is attracted to him despite the danger.

The author describes the The Scarlett Mark as a MedEvil Romantasy and I think that neatly sums up the book. It's not my usual genre but I did enjoy it. Rich prose and intriguing characters make for an engaging story.

This is the first of the three book series The Odin Saga and the author has nicely set this up in the epilogue.

Amazon.com Review
Viktor Frankl, author of the smash bestseller Man's Search for Meaning, offers a more straightforward alternative to traditional Freudian psychoanalysis: one's problems may be rooted in a failure to find a meaning in life beyond one's interior world. The basis for his interpretation, however, is not so straightforward. It lies in Frankl's existential analysis, plumbing for the reasons that people have repressed their consciences, their love, their creativity. By legitimizing a spiritual aspect of the human mind, Frankl has separated us definitively from the animal kingdom, but it is still up to each of us to rise to our human potential.

From Kirkus Reviews
These nine essays comprise a kind of sequel to the author's famous foundation work of ``logotherapy,'' Man's Search for Meaning, with a focus on a person's spiritual rather than existential striving. Vienna-based psychiatrist and neurologist Frankl, the author of 31 books, makes some profound observations about the nature of religiosity, awareness of which he believes must be incorporated into psychology. For example, he says that humans have a ``spiritual unconscious,'' that each person has a latent intuition and yearning for the transcendent, and that this is often activated when a person must deal with the ``tragic triad--pain, guilt and death.'' Unfortunately, Frankl's prose never quite brings his important subject to life; it's too academic, with a dearth of vivid anecdotal material or case studies. And it sometimes lapses into Latinisms and abstruse formulations, as in his reference to ``pre-reflective ontological self-understanding,'' when what Frankl really means is ``the wisdom of the heart.'' As important, the author's notion of the transcendent is so broad as to be almost meaningless; thus, he defines God as ``the partner of our most intimate soliloquies,'' a definition that seems to involve a kind of theological sophistry which has little if anything to say about a person's responsibility to others. At the same time, Frankl's notion of faith is black and white; he states, ``I personally think that either belief in God is unconditional or is not belief at all. If it is unconditional, it will stand and face the fact that six million died in the Nazi holocaust,'' as if belief could never coexist with doubt, as if any theology could ``stand and face'' the shattering reality of mechanistic mass murder. Frankl's question about ultimate meaning and a few of his observations are profound, yet much else in this sometimes rambling book disappointingly stops at the surface. -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. Review
"A powerful psychological exploration of the religious quest. Man's Search for Ultimate Meaning is to be treasured by psychologists and theologians and by men and women who wrestle with ultimate questions and encounter God as often in the question as in the answer." -- Michael Berenbaum

"One of the great souls of our time shares with us the distilled wisdom of a lifetime of personal and professional experience in this truly important book." -- Rabbi Harold Kushner

A Compelling Look at Our Search for Meaning in Life
By Joe Broadmeadow
Frankl's insightful analysis of the motivation of man's search for meaning is a compelling read. While this is a more scientific analysis of his "logotherapy" approach to analysis, it is nevertheless a great read

Hard reading but interesting and useful.
By Sahra Badou
I enjoyed parts of this book, but not all of it, for I couldn't understand most of it. This is a book to read more than once to really understand, unless you are a psychologist. I will certainly read it again; I am sure I missed a lot of important and useful information.

A lot of the material has to do with the interpretation of dreams, and about the theories of Freud. I also found the book too technical for the average reader, and found it confusing at times. For example, the author says, "Here it is not the ego that becomes conscious of the id but rather the self that becomes conscious of itself." I did take a few psychology courses back in school, but I still find such statements difficult to grasp and comprehend. Are such statements merely a play with words? Or should an effort be made to understand such statements? And is my understanding of such a statement the correct one as meant by the author? Without some training in psychology I do find some statements and theories hard to grasp.

In a nutshell, the book is about the human need to find meaning in daily life. The author believes that man doesn't ask, "What is the meaning of life?" but rather life asks man that very profound question. That's a very interesting statement, but again, is it just a play with words? Is Life a living entity, or are we the living entities contained in Life? In other words, can Life ask us questions?

For the author, the deep root of human meaning lies not in drives and desires, but in spirituality and responsibility. But what is responsibility, and what is spirituality? We all have different beliefs, and we all have different responsibilities. Is there a unifying global theory for all human beliefs and responsibilities? Such statements made it hard for me to relate to this book.

According to the author, in order to be truly whole, we must integrate not just the mind and body, but the spirit as well. Only by exploring and coming to terms with our spiritual selves will we come to be our true selves. But this is confusing. What does he mean by the body? Is the body a thinking organism like the mind, or is the mind contained in the body? And what is the difference between the mind and the brain? Is the mind contained in the brain? Not obvious, the mind could very well be in the heart, or somewhere else. And what is the spirit, and where is it? Is the spirit contained in our body, or exterior of it? Does the spirit exist at all, or is the spirit the mind? We are delving into a territory that cannot be proven by science. Science has not yet proven the existence of a spirit. If a spirit does exist, does it too die at death, or is our spirit a non-physical entity?

I think to really understand this book and enjoy it one has to first be able to define many terms used in the book, such as id, legotherapy, existential analysis, mind, spirit etc... One thing is for sure, I did get interested in learning more about psychology and Freud. But honestly, I'm still as much baffled about my true meaning of life as when I first started reading and finished reading this book. This book was not a quick fix to my ultimate meaning in life, but the publisher does claim that this book has changed the lives of millions of people. But religious books, such as the Bible, the Torah, the Quran, the Bhagavad-Gita, just to name a few, have also changed the lives of millions and given them the answers to man's search for the ultimate meaning of life.

There were some very interesting and enjoyable passages in the book that are useful in one's path to the ultimate meaning of life. For example, the author says that man has deeper motivations than pleasure or power. I do agree. We all have (I think) the need to serve something beyond ourselves. The author says that we are most fully human by loving unselfishly and/or by serving a higher cause. Isn't this the essence of all religions?

I did like the passages on the interpretation of dreams, especially those of prisoners and suicidal persons. Even criminals subconsciously search for and find the meaning to life through their dreams!

There is a nice story about a woman trying to save a scorpion from drowning. Every time she reaches out to grab the scorpion to lift him out of the water, the scorpion stings her. A man watching this scene unfold in front of his eyes is baffled at the insistence of the woman to save the scorpion. After seeing her stung by the scorpion repeatedly, and seeing her in extreme pain and on the verge of death from the scorpion's poison, he screams at her to stop trying to save the scorpion. He says, "Can't you see it is the scorpion's nature to sting you. Why are you still trying to save it?" The woman answers him, "Can't you see that it is in my nature to save it, so why should I stop trying?" In other words, because it is in her nature to save the scorpion, she can't stop herself from this act. Is our ultimate meaning in life determined by our instinctive actions?

Review
'This book largely hits its target and is useful not only for students of philosophy, but also for a broader audience. The authors deserve special praise ... for the broader context offered than in similar books [and] also for a coherent structure and explanatory scope that are both intellectually challenging. History... offers a reader the prospect of answers to central and fundamental questions that are desperately needed in the current era ... an ambitious and potentially powerful book.' - Thesis Eleven

Great even for a beginner exploring many of today's ethical issues
By jules
I used this textbook in an undergraduate Communication Ethics course last year. It very helpful in introducing me to the study of ethics and how it fits into today's issues.

The book is divided into two parts: Ethical Theory (chapters 1-7)and Ethical Issues (chapters 8-19). The first part of the book actually gives you the "tools" to better discuss the issues raised in the chapters of the second part.

At the end of the book there is even a short appendix and sample ethics paper. This section helps the average student who is unfamiliar with the structure and reasoning behind a formal ethics paper.

I especially liked the way some that chapters began with scenarios that helped tie in each ethical theory to dilemmas we face everyday. It made it easier to understand and relate the thoughts of Kant and Aristotle to today's average person and the decisions they make-- their "moral dilemmas" and such.

Bottom line...well-organized, great for undergrads, an excellent source, and you probably use more everyday ethics than you think you do...

Great Resource for Intro Ethics
By esselle
I choose MacKinnon's 4th edition of this text, while in search of one that would work well for online instruction. I have since moved on to the current edition, which contains a few, but what I consider, significant and useful changes and expansions from the 4th.

For a lower division introductory course in ethics, I've found this text exceptionally useful. From an online perspective, I find it straightforward, clear, and concise. Whether used as the essential core resource, as a structural component from which to build and expand, or as a supplement, I think MacKinnon's text well worth consideration.

I read through quite a number (or as my daughter would say, 'mass quantities') of texts before making the decision to go with MacKinnon. While this text isn't the only resource I use in my courses, I do use it as the framework around which they are designed and built. Highly recommended from this online instructor!

Well Written and Very Complete Book on Ethics
By Frederick S. Goethel
My daughter took an ethics course at a local community college this semester and this book was the textbook. As I was interested, I read along with the class (and even more) as the semester progressed.

The book is broken into 2 main sections: Ethical Theory and Ethical Issues. The first part contains the theory of ethics from a number of standpoints, including Relativism, Egoism, Utilitarianism, Kant's Theories and Natural Law. The second section is filled with discussions of ethical issues of today including pornography, euthanasia, abortion, sexual morality, environmentalism, animal rights, stem cell research and much more.

The book is comprehensive and very well written. It is easy to follow and gives latitude in the areas of ethics that are discussed. Finally, there is a sample ethics paper in the rear, making this a very comprehensive and useful textbook.

From Publishers Weekly
With more than twenty-five years of correspondence between "two old scribblers," world-renowned writer Rainer Maria Rilke and his sounding-board, one-time lover, friend and mentor Lou Andreas-Salome, Snow and Winkler have gathered an intimate portrait of an important literary relationship. Unfortunately, a falling-out in 1901 led Andreas-Salome to demand Rilke burn all the letters she had sent to him, which he obliged, making it difficult, in the beginning, to understand the nuance of their romance. As a poet courting an older, married woman, Rilke's early letters are fervid and eager, full of overblown romantic revelations: "all the roses in the world bloom for you and by means of you ... and only through an act of royal condescension do you maintain the pretense that they aren't really yours and allow Spring to keep them." Later, when Andreas-Salome's voice chimes in, the pair settle into a more introspective exchange, one frequently troubled by the insecure poet's vascillation between elation and despondency. Translated into elegant but stiff prose by Snow and Winkler, professors at Rice University who translated Rilke's Diaries of a Young Poet, this work is lustrous and illuminating, a perfect companion for fans of Rilke's poetry and the literary world of the early 20th century. 16 pages of illustrations.

From The New Yorker
When Rilke first met Salomé in 1897, he was twenty-one, an aspiring poet, and she was a married woman of thirty-six who had published a multitude of books and essays on philosophical and literary subjects.Their correspondence was initially one-sided—Rilke, besotted, sent a torrent of mail, while Salomé wished she could make him "go completely away" - but the two developed a passionate partnership as friends, lovers, confidants, and counsellors. This collection of some two hundred letters, written over nearly three decades, enriches our picture of Rilke and Salomé with curious details: Rilke makes arrangements for Salomé's beloved dog, in advance of a visit; Salomé, practicing in mid-life as a psychoanalyst, claims success treating patients with Rilke's poems: "They heard your tone as that of Life."

From Booklist
This is an invaluable collection uniting translations of the entire existing correspondence between the remarkable German poet Rainer Maria Rilke and his psychoanalyst-muse Lou Andreas-Salome. The letters confirm such details as Rilke's name change from Rene to Rainer at Lou's urging, and Lou's involvement with the distinguished turn-of-the-century thinkers Freud and Nietzsche. More importantly, the book offers a fascinating glimpse into a profound 29-year friendship that arced from infatuation to sexual intimacy, frustration to separation, enlightenment to respect. The letters reveal in both tender and insightful prose Rilke's creative and mental insecurities, along with his enormous poetic talent and innovative thinking. To call Andreas-Salome a muse would be to miss her uncanny grasp of Rilke's art, mind, and soul. She often brilliantly verbalized what he was about better than he, anticipating growth and outcomes he seemed unable to envision. Although beginning as mentor and idealized mother figure, Lou developed into a confidant and near-priestly advisor, able to not only appreciate but also tenderly nurture Rilke's creative genius. There is no reviewing correspondence. There is present either only the (inevitably) voyueristic pleasure of gazing into dead mens dreams, or nothing at all, at which point we set the book down, and carry on composing our own secrets.
But the idea of positing a critical eye on one's letters (unless they are means exclusive of a recepient, as with Seneca) seems to me to be entirely ridiculous.
I can only say that I was happy to the point of giddiness to discover the recently published letters between Rilke and Andreas-Salome.
I devoured the book whole, and found myself inspired by Rilke's early uncertanties, and the almost frighteningly composed replies of his one time lover, now become mentor. It offered a glimpse into the world of this beautiful poet, who previously, seemed to have sprung fully formed into the author of the Duino Elegies, as though he were always the master we have come to admire.
And here, beset by dread, here overcome by an almost childish enthusiasm, we find him not stripped of his title rather enriched by his likeness to ourselves. And it's as though we always sensed beneath the richness of his language a kinship we could never adaquetely define, here at last the inexplicable is made manifest.
I do not speak to Andreas-Salome, she does not move me, but she was a freind of Rilke's and therefore deserves at least our respect.
If you are curious about the genesis and flowering of a poet, you will find no better testament than this collection, and much like the Memoirs of Pablo Neruda, you will find in the simplest relation, a poetry unto itself.

gorgeous

Rilke lends the same exquisite clarity and rapture to romantic love as he does to his brilliantly tender hearted observations of the spirit.

Simply amazing.

Being that this was one of my impulse purchases, I was surprised when I found myself still awake at 4am pouring over the pages, unable to put it down. Rilke invites the reader (Lou Salome) into his innermost thoughts and psyche in such a visceral and eloquent way. You begin to often see yourself in his words and it sends your mind racing. This alone would be enough. But having it countered by Lou's (often paradigm-shifting) deep understanding and almost clinical input - it makes for one of the most intellectual and enlightened dialogues of the 20th century.

This book can feed your soul, if you let it.
