Boxed set offers bonus portfolio of more photos

I bought this boxed set as a gift for my daughter, first for her to read and second for her to have to read to her children as they become old enough. I have reviewed each volume as it was published.
The boxed set includes a small portfolio of more pictures of the sort that grace the pages of each volume, which makes buying the boxed set, now that it is available, a better idea than purchasing each book separately. As I have wondered about this series and at least one other, I don't see this as truly YA genre. I mean, yes, intelligent 'tweens and teens can read and love it, but it is, overall, pretty heavy and heady stuff. In short, this is as much for adult fans of alternate reality/history as it is for its purported target demographic. Buy it, you'll love it.

I would like to comment on the quality of the books themselves

I recently purchased this boxed set of Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children for myself. I am excited to finish these before the movie comes out. I don't want to review the writing as I am no expert but, I do want to say that I am thoroughly enjoying myself with these books. I would like to comment on the quality of the books themselves. Over my years as a reader I have found the quality of books themselves declining. Most often the pages are either thin and flimsy or rough and grainy. It has been years since I have seen a book with evenly cut pages! this set of books is beautiful! The quality of the paper is wonderful and the pages are cut perfectly I know i will enjoy these fooks for years to come. They are a wonderful addition to my home library!

A very good set of books

I was happily surprised at how much I enjoyed reading these books. I read the set in 4 days, I enjoyed it that much. Well written, entertaining and well paced. Mr. Riggs was able to suspend my disbelief with interesting characters, entertaining situations, colorful descriptors and comic timing. While I am much older than what I assume the target audience is, the story was able to capture my interest and hold it. I would recommend this set to young, old and in between, alike. I am betting, you won't be disappointed.

Kindergarten-Grade 3 - Luke wants to join his older brother and his friends in their stickball game but they think he's too small. The boys live in the shadow of Ebbets Field, where the great Jackie Robinson plays for the Brooklyn Dodgers in this summer of 1951. When Luke finally gets a chance to substitute, he strikes out twice. Back home, his grandma encourages him, saying, "Not everyone plays like Jackie Robinson all the time. Not even Jackie Robinson." She takes Luke to a game where he watches his hero, two strikes down, deliver the tie-breaking run. Later, the boy has a vision of the slugger, who speaks to him: "Your grandma was right. You can't give up." In the imaginary scenes, Robinson and his teammates are dramatically set apart in shades of gray, white, and black, while Luke and his surroundings remain vibrantly hued. Isadora's lively watercolors with fluid lines and warm colors elevate this slight story. Luke is winsome and sympathetic, but the tale and its message are predictable and heavy-handed. The inclusion of Robinson will hold some interest for baseball fans, but Gavin Curtis's The Bat Boy & His Violin (S & S, 1998) and Peter Golenbock's Teammates (Harcourt, 1990) are better choices for young readers. - Marilyn Taniguchi, Beverly Hills Public Library, CA

Unfortunately, on his one turn at bat, he strikes out. He feels defeated until Grandma takes him to see the great Jackie Robinson play. After Jackie strikes out twice before hitting a home run, Luke begins to understand that even the greatest players can't always be perfect. A final spread in which Luke imagines a conversation with Robinson may confuse children, and the messages about determination are blatant. Even so, children mastering new skills will easily relate to Luke's frustration when early attempts bring failure, and they'll be comforted, right along with Luke, by supportive Grandma. Isadora paints her African American characters in angled perspectives and shadows that extend the sports action and reassuring emotions. Suggest Angela Johnson's Just Like Josh Gibson (2004) for another nostalgic, bat-and-ball picture book about African American kids finding inspiration and pride in sports heroes. Gillian Engberg

Luke hits a homerun!

I thought this a homerun book. My family is baseball crazy and we have 4 children. When I bought this book and brought it home there was an explosion in my house.........even though we live in London, baseball is very exciting and we follow it continually. Thank you for such a splendid book and for letting us understand the times in the USA when Jackie Robinson lived.

I am giving this book to my nephew for his birthday, because he loves sports, and I want him to learn the historic realities of our country where baseball was one of the last professional sports hold-outs for integration.

paranormal time traveling romance

Johnny Doesn't Drink Champagne is a YA time traveling novel complete with vampires. Author Cody Young delivers a delightful tale set in London's present day and the year 1483. This was an enchanting, suspenseful, romantic tale that had me turning the pages to race to its conclusion. I liked the combination of historical information and fiction. I became completely immersed in the time period.

The tale is told from the POV of protagonist seventeen year old Madison Lambourne. Madison is traveling with her senior class to London. She meets Johnny DeVere at the Heathrow airport. Johnny calls her Madeline and appears to know her. She finds a torn note that falls from his pocket. It is written on old paper and says, "In time you will forgive me. I will be waiting for you at..." The handwriting is hers. This encounter will test all that Madison knows and prove her braver then even she imagined.

The story centers on the Tower of London, past tragedies and the keepers of the River of Time. Madison and Johnny travel back in time, to right wrongs and protect the river of time. The romance between Johnny and Madison is sweet, romantic and youthful. Madison is independent and takes charge, sometimes at her own peril. Johnny is dark, world-wise and obviously taken with Madison.

I have to mention the cover. I am not a fan, and feel it doesn't do the wonderful tale that lies within justice. I would have liked to have seen Madison running from the Tower in the lovely period dress she wore or the image of Johnny(as seen on author's website) in black and white. The old adage "never judge a book by its cover" applies here. I would have walked right by this novel. I am so guilty of being drawn to a book by its cover and then reading the synopsis.

Johnny Doesn't Drink Champagne was a charming novel. The plot was captivating and an effortless read. Young skillfully took us from past to present, while slowly giving us clues to the past relationship between Madison and Johnny. Some of the characters were humorous, especially the school chaperone.

I recommend this to fans of historical fiction and YA paranormal romance. Johnny Doesn't Drink Champagne is available in eBook and paperback forms. I look forward to reading the next book in this series. Cody Young's other published works include, The Lady and the Locksmith, Scandal at the Farmhouse, and American Smile.

A historical adventure of epic proportion

Madison was transported back in time after following a mysterious figure that she recognises but cannot remember, whilst on a visit to the Tower of London.

A historical adventure of epic proportion which describes the medieval period perfectly, with the fear of the tower and many people living in poverty, through the book you can sense the smells and fears in London 1483.

On the journey our heroine discovers the full facts of the mysterious (and must say very good looking) figure Johnny De Vere and the secrets of how he has kept his tender age of 21. Also discovering the king has locked up his two illegitimate sons to be executed. Madison is horrified, can she save them? Will Johnny help her as he is "the guardian of the river of time" which preserves history as it is.

A story for both male and female readers, the adventures, historical facts and of course romance will keep the reader wanting to turn the pages. There is not many stories that I did not want to end but this was one!

Not really a plus side to this one...

This book was written in what I call first person descriptive... a second by second play of the main characters' life, frankly I don't need to read their every movement, thought or moment...it makes for tedious reading...get on with the story. Another thing bogging the story down was the so called relationship between the two mains - Maddie and Johnny...again, a lot of nonsense to weed through to get the the main story line. I did finish this book but to be honest I am not sure why and I won't be reading book 2.

Country Life Meets City Lawyer and Wins!
From the first sentence through the last word you will be enthralled with this book. While Mrs. City gladly greets country life and indeed blossoms, Mister City fights it every step of the way. The book isn't just about the gradual love affair with the country it is also about marriage and how to be a great neighbor. Pigs in Clover offers you important life lessons - like putting your partner's needs ahead of your own, or how it is okay to let others help you in times of need! You will cry real tears on some pages and laugh aloud on others. You will find yourself rooting for the Mister and smiling with joy when he realizes where his happiness is to be found - inside himself in the country. I am hopeful there will be a book 2 because I am anxious to find out what has transpired after the book ended. Enjoy! Book Review: Pigs in Clover

Pigs in Clover is the hilarious tale of Simon Dawson and his wife, Debbie, who decide to move to the country and be almost totally self-sufficient on their small farm in Devon, England. Prior to their life as small-time farmers they lived in London and worked as a real estate agent (Simon) and an attorney (Debbie).

This book was so wonderful, it was a truly enjoyable read. I can really not even write a long review about it because there was really nothing that I didn't like. I loved reading about country life and their struggles. Simon's relationship with his animals was definitely entertaining and I loved the parts with their friend Ziggy. This was a wonderfully entertaining memoir. Never a boring moment. Sometimes it was funny, sometimes it was stressful, sometimes it was sad, Simon did a great job of making the reader feel the emotion right through the pages as if they were right there on the smallholding with him. No matter what was happening in the book, the atmosphere remained light and chatty. This is a great pleasure read and I am giving it 5 out of 5 stars.

About the Author
RUSS McDONALD (Ph.D., University of Pennsylvania) is the editor of four plays in the revised Pelican series of Shakespeare's plays and the author of Shakespeare Reread (1994), Shakespeare and Jonson/Jonson and Shakespeare (1988), and numerous articles on early modern theater, comedy, and opera. A celebrated teacher, McDonald has taught at Mississippi State University, the University of Hawaii, and the University of Rochester. He has been actively involved with the NEH-sponsored Teaching Shakespeare Institute at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C., and he has also served as resident scholar, head scholar, and institute director of Teaching Shakespeare's Language.

Excellent and Informative

Russ McDonald is not someone many people have heard of, unless you happen to live in the world of Shakespeare scholars, in which case, I would be surprised if you have not. Mr. McDonald was for a long time associated with the Folger Library, and has edited numerous volumes of the Penguin Shakespeare editions, among other credentials. I have had the good fortune to be in one of his classes, and I can think of no one else I have ever met that has so much love and appreciation for Shakespeare's genius, while simultaneously being able to pass that to his students. I honestly don't think there is anything this man *doesn't* know about Shakespeare.
That being said, The Bedford Companion is less about The Bard, and more so about the times in which he lived. While attention is given to his plays, equal attention is given to such things as the history of the Globe Theater, Shakespeare's early life, the economic situations of the time, and a history of Shakespeare appreciation, or "Bardolatry". It shows Shakespeare as a human, as a buisinessman, a family man, and how he eventually become know as the greatest writer in the English language. (Most of his plays weren't published until after his death.) This book may not help you fully understand Hamlet, but it can certainly make it more interesting.

An excellent teacher resource

The original documents pertaining to Shakeseare's life and works is an excellent teacher resource. The text of his will, excerpts of newspaper accounts that sparked The Tempest and the DeWitt drawing of the Globe made our studies of Shakesperae more concrete.As a loyal fan of Shakespeare, I enjoyed the reading. I think the text is a little dry for most.

A Must Read for Any and All Interested in Shakespeare

This book is a great overview of all things Shakespeare. It intorduces the man himself, the language of the works, the culture of the Elizabethans and the theatre, sosurces, and basic scholarly criticism and ideas. A wonderful foundational text with primary documents which greatly enhance the reading and give the subject a new life.
