I started this book and I was like I know I'm going to get my heart broken

I'm not going to lie.. when I read the sypnosis of this book I was hesitant to read it because I'm not into "triangles" because the heroine always goes for the safer choice and not the right one, but boy was I wrong... its just so much more.. I started this book and I was like I know I'm going to get my heart broken, but Its just so good that I need to continue.. I did finish it and I was freaking blown away.. I'm not a big fan of fairytales and books like this one, but this book definitely changed my POV about them.. We meet Ginger, Woodman and Cain...

I fell in love with Ginger instantly let's be honest she is just beautiful and amazing.. she won my heart when she was 12.. but boy at the end of the book I wanted my own damn Ginger

Woodman.. well with him I wanted to hate him, but I didn't in the end.. yes he was the safer choice the best friend.. we knew he was going to be the right one, but from the start I knew he wasn't the one.. I respected him in the sense of being with Ginger even thought he knew were her heart was.. its hard to deal with falling in love with someone who is obviously in love with someone else.. so kudos to you my man for that..

Cain... now bare with me here because this dude is just wow!! I have no words Team Cain for the win!!!! I loved Cain since page 1!!! yes there were times where I was like dammit Cain!!! Why Cain, etc, but I understood him completely because when you love someone as much as he did Ginger you want the best for them even when you think you're not it.. you rather see them shine and be with someone else than hurt them.. and this is what my boy Cain did he stepped aside and put aside his feelings to make Woodman and Ginger happy.. what he didn't realize was that "the right choice" broke Ginger.. In the end I was happy on how the end turned out because Cain really truly deserved to be happy..

As a guy I'm going to say that this book changed my POV in some things.. not going to get into details, but I'm glad I read it and I will continue to support this amazing author without a doubt so I give 5 Happily ever after stars to this book!!!!

How can you describe perfection??

I'm having trouble finding words to describe how I feel about this book. How can I put into words the feelings I have for characters who touched my heart in such profound ways. Katy has such a way with words. I felt every happy feeling, every heartbreak, every tear shed. I laughed at Cain's witty nature, my heart broke for the bad boy with an amazing heart.. It ached for him in so many ways. There are so many feels.. So so many.. The loss, the love, the healing, the words of wisdom. The shift in the story where it all changes.. More than once.. There are so many things I want to say... I just don't know how..

Cain ~ the bad boy with the amazing heart who does’t feel worthy
Woodman ~ the golden boy who has his life all planned out
Ginger ~ the girl they both love and she loves them both in wildly completely different ways
… How can this possibly end well????
It is destined that someone is going to get hurt…
And boy does it hurt… In ways that you won’t expect. Things happen that you NEVER see coming from a mile away.. until it hits, and it hits hard. And you're left wondering how your shattered heart will be whole again.. But it mends. Katy's beautiful way with words heals that broken heart.

I had all sorts of pre conceived notions when I stated this book.. I had a clear cut winner before I opened to page 1… that the is the problem with preconceived notions. They tend to be WRONG… This book was more than I anticipated it could be, nothing of what I expected it to be and everything I wanted it to be!! There is something that is so pure in the love they all have for one another born out of a lifetime of memories. No malice.. No intentional heartbreak so to speak and that's what hurts the most. Misunderstandings, lost opportunities, words left unsaid.. But true love has a way of finding its way no matter what..

There are things you know at a soul deep level. Who you love. Who you are meant to love in the deepest depth of your being can’t be ignored no matter what your head might tell you. Ginger always had to follow her heart..

An unforgettable love story

Ginger's Heart is Katy Regnery's new modern fairy tale based on Little Red Riding Hood. It's a story about the Three Musketeers of McHuid Farm: Virginia Laire McHuid aka Ginger and her two childhood friends Cain Holden Wolfram and Josiah Asher Woodman. Cain and Josiah are cousins (born to identical twin sisters Sarah and Sophie) and couldn't be more different.

The blond haired and green eyed Josiah is the golden boy of Apple Valley. He is the son of a local banker and is raised up in a wealthy family. The Woodmans and the McHuids are very close. They spend a lot of time together and invite each other to social events.

The dark haired and blue eyed Cain is the trouble maker of Apple Valley. His father is the stallion manager at the McHuid farm. Even though his father Klaus and Ginger's father Ranger are on good terms, the Wolframs are excluded from the fancy festivities at the McHuid household.

Despite their differences, each cousin owns a piece of Ginger's heart. Over the years the dynamic between these three will change when feelings get into the mix that go far beyond friendship. Promises will be made and hearts will be broken. It will all come down to one question: Who will Ginger chose? The tender hearted golden boy that makes her feel safe and gives her stability or the blue eyed unpredictable devil that sets her heart on fire?

One thing is sure: There are two cousins and one girl. Someone wins and someone loses.

Teams will be chosen and lines will be drawn. In the end not everyone will be happy. I'm not going to tell you whom Ginger will chose, you need to read this amazing book in order to find out! Go into this book with an open heart and mind. I promise you it will not leave you unaffected. For those of you who are wondering if there is a menage I guarantee you there isn't! The triangle in this book is an emotional and not a physical one.

Katy Regnery's flawless writing took me on a reading journey I will soon not forget! She has the ability to make you feel all the feels and write characters you will hold dear to your heart long after you have finished the book.

About the Author
Captain Shannon Meehan was a leader of a tank platoon for the storied 1st Cavalry Division of the U.S. Army. He graduated from Virginia Military Institute with distinction, having also studied at Oxford, and earned the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, and other military honors while serving in Iraq.

Roger Thompson is Associate Professor of English and Fine Arts at VMI. He is an award-winning nonfiction writer and has published both academic and non-academic work in a variety of journals.

A n intimate look at a soldier's consciences

I was unable to put this book down. It gave an inside look into a soldier's struggles to be his best and to lead his men in the most trying of times, and the decisions that had to be made. Putting his emotions aside, only to have to deal with them later and possibly forever. My heart bled for his struggles.

Great Story, Extremely Well Written

Beyond Duty is an impressively written account of an officer's experiences during the War in Iraq. Capt. Meehan provides great detail about his journey and gives the reader an in-depth look into what life is really like for the soldiers of the war. The decisions he faced and the situations he and his men were involved in were incredible. His story is captivating and inspiring, and I would recommend this book to everyone.

Powerful Book

This book is well-paced, well-written, provocative and powerful. The first half is an informative and voyeuristic look at ground troops in pre- and post-surge Iraq, told first-hand by a tank officer. The second half has an emotional and narrative thrust that is uncompromising, haunting and above all else, honest. I couldn't put this book down. Read it. There are no easy answers, no tidy resolutions... this is life.

To my surprise a first rate Spider-Man/Venom storyline

I do not know why Marvel decided to stop producing "Peter Parker: Spider-Man" and replace it with "The Spectacular Spider-Man." After all, it is not like there is less about Spider-Man's secret identity in this or any other one of the web-heads comic book titles. Anyhow, in my Popular Culture class we have a comic book unit where students read "The Essential Spider-Man, Volume 1," which has "Amazing Fantasy" #15 and the first twenty issues and annual of "The Amazing Spider-Man." They put together a model of the defining elements that appear in most Spider-Man comic books and then pick up a current copy of "The Amazing Spider-Man," "The Spectacular Spider-Man" or "Ultimate Spider-Man" to see how that issue stacks up against their model. Usually their are some significant differences between now Peter Parker is married and has a real job as opposed to being a teenage science nerd. But their biggest complaint is that most of the issues they pick up today are always only one part of a continuing story. That makes it rather hard to pick up a single issue and get hooked, which is why Marvel has rectified that particular problem by having trade paperback collections of specific story lines.

"The Spectacular Spider-Man, Volume 1: The Hunger" has the first five issues of the comic and a confrontation between Spider-Man and Venom put together by Paul Jenkins (writer), Humberto Ramos (penciler) and Wayne Faucher (Inker). A series of assaults in New York City have left behind victims who are seemingly unconnected in a strange coma: each victim has been drained of their adrenaline and the only clue is a set of small puncture wounds just above the kidneys. While the cops are investigating Peter is feeling guilty over Flash Thompson's condition (the Green Goblin put Flash in a runaway truck and he ended up with severe brain damage). While on patrol Spider-Man runs into the twisted form of the half-human, half-alien symbiote known as Venom. Of course, Venom is responsible to for those attacks. However, the twist in this particular story is that Venom is no longer linked to Eddie Brock and the suit is looking for a new host.

Venom was never one of my favorite Spider-Man villains, especially the more he kept coming back. But "The Hunger" ends up being the best Venom story I can recall reading because it offers an interesting reinterpretation of the relationship between the suit and Eddie, which involves Spider-Man as well. This is not as earthshaking as finding out the Swamp Thing is really an elemental force of nature rather than a guy caught in between an explosion and a serum, but it does turn Eddie Brock into a tragic character as we find out why he hates Spider-Man and what the symbiote really wants as well. More importantly, in the end it puts Spider-Man in the position of having to make another one of those damned-if-you-do-damned-if-you-don't decisions that is a core part of the Spider-Man mythos that is aptly captured by Spider-Man's final thought in the story.

Ramos is a most distinctive artist whether drawing his elongated Spider-Man or Peter and his friends, and while it might strike some readers as too cartoonish, but it does work and the atmospheric coloring provided by Studio F gives it additional depth. We also have a nice guest appearance by the Fantastic Four in this storyline and seeing Ramos drawn that particular quartet is a nice little visual treat as well. But it is the story of "The Hunger" that is the strength.. There is no reason to expect that this will lead to better Venom stories down the road, but since I was actually interested in how this one played out for once, that is a pretty good recommendation right there.

Venom's Back

Finally a good Venom story. Here's some pros and cons...

PROS:

1. Eddie Brock is now more sympathetic; we see why he REALLY hates Spider-Man now, and it makes more sense.

2. If you knew nothing about Venom before this story, you wouldn't be lost. Everything is fleshed out well and I can almost say that this is Venom's "Killing Joke" story - definitive.

CONS:

1. Ya know.. the art is cool and all, but does Venom HAVE to be so huge? Ramos once drew a picture of Spidey and Venom fighting for a WIZARD magazine special and Venom looked right. Here... I dunno.

2. *SPOILER* The whole "A child grows within me" thing seemed pointless to me. It came out of nowhere. I guess that adds to the whole reason for its need for survival, but c'mon, Venom has had like 6 kids by this point. We have yet to see this new offspring and hopefully we won't anytime soon.

The Russian-born Popoff tends to be descriptive rather than analytical, and her English is often awkward and unclear. Incredible women

I wonder if I could be as supportive as these wives were, especially Anna Dostoevsky and Sophia Tolstoy! The Russian authors are my most favorite writers - just unbelievable writing. I'm not an intellectual, but I know good stories when I read them. And, if it were not for these women, many of our treasured books woud not have been written. I gave it only 4 stars instead of 5 because after a while all the wives stories were quite similar in their struggles to help their husbands be better human beings. The author, Alexandra Popoff, should be commended for the research she did to compile this tribute to these incredible wives.

The story behind some of the best works of literature

I have always been fascinated by Russian literature mainly because such great works come out of such stifling and authoritarian political systems, tsarist or Soviet. In this book I found the incredible stories behind some of the giants of literature - Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Solzhenitsyn, Nabakov and others. The main point that weaves each of these narratives together is that the production of these works was an active partnership between the writer and their wives. What is most enjoyable about this book is not only the powerful, gripping narrative (I could barely but the book down), but the sense that I am getting the inside story about how works like War and Peace were created. It is not like learning how sausage is made but actually the complete opposite: I want to know this. It gives these works of literature a new light, and I actually look at them differently having read this book.

There was a true partnership with their wives who had a significant impact on their husband's writing. The other side of each of the narratives told is the human side. We can see the suffering of writers in the Soviet period, the KGB threats, the Gulag system. I have memories of some amazing scenes from the book such as how the wife of one Russian poet (Mandelstam) kept the writer's poems in her head by memory so that she could keep her word to her husband, who died after being imprisoned, that she would preserve them. The political persecution and utter danger that so many of these writers and their wives went through and their stolid determination to trek ahead and bring their works to the world was inspirational. I highly recommend this book for anyone who has ever enjoyed reading one of the great Russian novels or poems. It will open your eyes!

Married to genius

"The Wives" is a breezy read through the lives of six famous Russian authors' spouses: Sophia Tolstoy, Anna Dostoevsky, Vera Nabokov, Elena Bulgakov, Natalaya Solzhenitsyn, and Nadezha Mandelstam. Like Outlaw Marriages: The Hidden Histories of Fifteen Extraordinary Same-Sex Couples, it's a quick read, summaries of famous women and their husbands' literary works. Mandelstam, Solzhenitsyn, and Bulgakov dealt with Soviet oppression. The Nabokovs fled the Soviet Union for America, living their lives in relative peace. Anna Dostoevsky helped her epileptic husband Fyodor deal with writing deadlines, his gambling addiction- the early years of their marriage were rocky, but the remainder of it was serene. She acted as his Muse, his publisher;Fyodor was nearly 3 decades her senior-and in the nearly 3 decades after his death, she carried on his legacy. In contrast, the Tolstoys had a tumultuous relationship from the get-go. It was stormy from the beginning to its bitter end at The Death of Tolstoy: Russia on the Eve, Astapovo Station, 1910 There were battles over diaries, copyrights. Sophia Tolstoy found herself in the position of her family's sole breadwinner after Tolstoy's conversion in the 1880s. Ironically, the Tolstoys come across as the most modern of all the marriages. Leo Tolstoy corresponded in Esperanto with Pyotr Tchaikovsky's openly gay protege, Sergei Taneev, and threw jealous fits when Sophia befriended him. Sophia's "Song without words" about an unhappily married woman who falls in love with a gay composer and checks herself into an asylum, while the composer goes on a European vacation with his boyfriend, can be deemed the slash fiction sequel to Leo Tolstoy's Kreutzer Sonata Both Tolstoys were approving of their youngest surviving child, Alexandra, having her father's secretary, Varvara Feokritova, as her companion. This was in the late 19th century. You can't make this stuff up. The Solzhenitsyns' marriage comes across as a soap opera entangled with the Soviet regime. Natalaya bore Alexander's children, when it had been assumed that due to cancer treatment, he was incapable of fatherhood. His wife refused to grant a divorce, despite the fact his mistress Natalaya was bearing his children. Solzhenitsyn penned his experiences into Cancer Ward and The Gulag Archipelago Eventually, they found freedom. Natalaya was quite harsh on Sophia Tolstoy, saying, "She should've moved into a cabin with Leo." Sophia bore nearly a dozen children to Leo;Natalaya comes across as easy on Leo's negligent fatherhood. Elena Bulgakov inspired The Master and Margarita, which would inspire the Rolling Stones' song Sympathy For The Devil For Bulgakov, his wife Elena represented sexual and literary liberation.

Popoff breezes through the wives' lives rather quickly. It's more of a primer. Her Sophia Tolstoy is a far superior book, and The Diaries of Sofia Tolstoy is a more direct read. "The Wives" makes a good beginning, like embarking onto the Samara steppe, or the vastness of the River Dnieper.

Sweet love.

The love between these two was simply sweet. I must say, for a young man Billy knew what he wanted and would not back down. Paris was hesitant, and rightfully so given the time and place they lived in but Billy had no intentions of letting that fear override their feelings for each other. I loved that the story didn't harp on the rough times they faced during the 60's and 70's, it was mentioned but not the focus. The focus was all about the love of a younger Caucasian boy falling in love with a older African American girl in a time when that just wasn't tolerated. It moved a little fast at times but I absolutely enjoyed it. I loved them both, but Billy and his unyielding, unapologetic feelings for Paris stole my heart.

I love the actual idealism in this book

It's amusing how many people still view interracial relationships as a curiosity. Although many of us are mature, well informed and accepting it wasn't the same 30 or even 20 years ago and even sometimes today

This well written story deals with a realistic black woman whose grounded nature gets uprooted when am idealistic younger white man wants to court her. There is a cliche I've heard over the years, and it is usually made by the idealistic white member of the relationship, "I don't see color, I just see you." That is such a backward statement. Yes we all see color even when we love someone who is different. The problem is that the people who don't like the "mixing" only see in black and white.

Billy had that idealistic "I don't see color" mentality which is why, no matter how much he said it would be alright he would get incredibly angry when they were mistreated by intolerant white people. Where as Paris' father was prepared for trouble and took care of things when they were seen out in public together.

I appreciate Ms. Anderson's portrayal of the couple and the two things they shared, their love and sexual desire. It is not unrealistic to think that these two young people got horny and wanted more than just first, second and third bases. Anyone who has a problem with desire being a major part of the story is missing the point of him saving himself for her. It was a cherished gift he promised to give her on their wedding night. If they couldn't wait for their wedding night then the love and commitment would not have seemed as true. They could have given in at any time but that would have made them like everyone else who takes that aspect of marriage lightly.

I thought it was great that I was constantly waiting for the shoe to drop. But it might have been more realistic if something a little more serious happened as opposed to just being talked down or refused service.

My only twp criticisms would be that his dream of being a civil rights attorney somehow disappeared. I would have loved that to be part of his learning process and realization that just wanting to make things right doesn't guarantee that they will turn out that way. I would have liked them to interact with couples their age who were the same race or interracial. Friends they could socialize with so they wouldn't seem so solitary.

Otherwise it was a great read and I highly recommend it.

The wrong place and the wrong time, just might be right. Forget about their families. The world's not to keen on the idea of them. Coming from two different world's, but raised without hate. Billy and Paris are two strangers that manage to form an undeniable connection on a deserted highway. That leads to falling in love.

Billy and Paris make a promises to their parents. Both in college and miles apart leads to restless night. Will they make it or will the outside tear them apart?
