The Essential Kafka, by Franz Kafka

Like George Orwell, Franz Kafka has given his name to a world of nightmare, but in Kafka's world, it is never completely clear just what the nightmare is. The Trial, where the rules are hidden from even the highest officials, and if there is any help to be had, it will come from unexpected sources, is a chilling, blackly amusing tale that maintains, to the very end, a relentless atmosphere of disorientation. Superficially about bureaucracy, it is in the last resort a description of the absurdity of 'normal' human nature. Still more enigmatic is The Castle. Is it an allegory of a quasi-feudal system giving way to a new freedom for the subject? The search by a central European Jew for acceptance into a dominant culture? A spiritual quest for grace or salvation? An individual's struggle between his sense of independence and his need for approval? Is it all of these things? And K? Is he opportunist, victim, or an outsider battling against elusive authority? Finally, in his fables, Kafka deals in dark and quirkily humorous terms with the insoluble dilemmas of a world which offers no reassurance, and no reliable guidance to resolving our existential and emotional uncertainties and anxieties.

Disgraceful THEFT of my Title, Essential Kafka.
By Phillip Lundberg
Theft of title: Essential Kafka !! - Perfidy! - I have the copyright to this title and I find it infuriating that Wordsworth classics would simply steal this and package their three separate books AS IF the title wasn't already taken in 2007/2009. Do NOT buy this disgrace. My copyright registration number is: TX 7-344-045.

Buried Alive: The Terrifying History of Our Most Primal Fear, by Jan Bondeson Ph.D.

"A necrobibliac classic: it may keep you up all night―not from fear but from fascination."―Kirkus Reviews, starred review

Readers of Edgar Allan Poe's tales―just think of The Premature Burial―may comfort themselves with the notion that Poe must have exaggerated: surely people of the 1800s could not have been at risk of being buried alive? But such stories filled medical journals as well as fiction, and fear in the populace was high. It was speculated, from the number of skeletons found in horrific, contorted positions inside their coffins, that ten out of every one hundred people were buried before they were dead. With over fifty illustrations, Buried Alive explores the medicine, folklore, history, and literature of Europe and the United States to uncover why such fears arose and whether they were warranted. "A weird and wonderful little tome."―Salon.com "Bondeson weaves a strange disturbing, and weirdly enthralling tale. Cremation never sounded so good."―Lingua Franca "A most useful and entertaining book....Deserves a place on every bedside table in America."―Patrick McGrath, author of Martha Peake: A Novel of the Revolution  More than 50 illustrations

Amazon.com Review
What could be worse than waking up in a dark, confined space and realizing that you are in a sealed coffin? Jan Bondeson details the history--factual and fictional--of this primal fear in Buried Alive.

Premature burial has a long literary history, from Boccaccio's Decameron to Romeo and Juliet to Wilkie Collins's Jezebel's Daughter and, of course, Edgar Allan Poe's "Premature Burial" and other works. Macabre tales of narrow escapes owing to grave robbers and lazy gravediggers, as well as horrific stories of exhumed coffins containing bloodied, contorted corpses, were common in both the medical and the lay press in the 18th and 19th centuries. Bondeson shows how these stories reflected public fears--fears caused in part by the development of resuscitation techniques for drowning victims, which fed a growing doubt in the reliability of prevailing signs of death. The medical community was divided on the issue; some were offended that the general public doubted their ability to determine death. Others, however, searched for definitive signs of death, many of which seem ludicrous today (one suggestion involved sticking the finger of a suspected corpse in the doctor's ear; if life remained the doctor would hear a faint buzzing sound). Bondeson also describes, in gleeful detail, other systems developed to prevent premature burial, including elaborate security coffins with signaling devices inside. More remarkable are the "Leichenhäuser" or waiting mortuaries where corpses were kept in warm rooms until putrefaction was evident. Each corpse had a number of strings or wires attached to its fingers and toes, so that the slightest twitch would sound an alarm and medical aid could be brought immediately. These Leichenhäuser were built in many cities in German-speaking Europe; one built in Munich in 1808 featured both a common and a luxury section and was open to the public (Mark Twain visited in the 1880s); the Vienna Leichenhäus used an electronic warning system (though not in its separate section for suicides, it's interesting to note); and two were built in Stuttgart as late as 1875.

Were these precautions necessary? No "patient" ever actually revived while in any of the German waiting mortuaries, but Bondeson does describe some documented near-miss cases from the 20th century in which supposed corpses were revived. Throughout the book, Bondeson recounts old wives' tales, urban legends, and scientific study with equal levels of straightforwardness and humor--and, perhaps, a slight smirk. Though it's not for the squeamish (which is perhaps an unnecessary warning; what squeamish person is going to read a book about premature burial?), Buried Alive is an entertaining and eminently readable look at this little-known history. --Sunny Delaney

From Publishers Weekly
"The huge modern textbooks on forensic medicine... choose to ignore the fact that less than 150 years ago many medical practitioners freely admitted to being uncertain whether their patients were dead or alive." As the author (whose excellent The London Monster was published in December; see Forecasts, Nov. 20, 2000) shows in this engrossing yet disappointing book, the fear of accidentally being buried alive reverberated throughout 18th- and 19th-century Europe and the United States, and even continued into the 20th century. Hundreds of stories about people being discovered buried alive circulated in medical journals, literature (from the medieval Decameron to Edgar Allan Poe) and popular lore. This fear spurred doctors to debate when life ends, and motivated Germany to create mortuaries in the 1800s in which corpses rotted for days before they could be interred. In 1822, another German invented a "security coffin," in which a person buried prematurely could breathe through a tube by triggering a mechanism. The subject is fascinating, and Bondeson, a medical doctor, is thorough in discussing the alleged cases. The "shameful past of medical science with regard to the certainty of the signs of death" was, indeed, a real problem. Yet he readily acknowledges that the numbers of those buried alive were "exaggerated." If that is true, as by his own account it appears to be, then a book that studied the fear itself and what factors affected this deep-rooted dread might have been more fruitful. The few pages where Bondeson does this--where, for instance, he discusses the impact of the coffin's development in the 17th and 18th centuries--are where his subject truly comes, well, alive. 30 illus.. (Mar.)Forecast: It worked for Poe and it'll work for Bondeson. This book, cleverly rich with illustrations, will not only sell well in hardcover but could prove a hit down the road in trade paperback.

From Library Journal
Except for tabloid reporters and fans of Edgar Allan Poe, few Americans today give a thought to an obsession that haunted their ancestors, the possibility of premature burial. Expanding a chapter in his recent A Cabinet of Medical Curiosities (LJ 10/15/97), Bondeson, a physician with a Ph.D. in experimental medicine, explores this terror and the facts behind it. Fear of premature burial as a public concern emerged in Europe in the late 18th century, as religion yielded to rationalism and physicians realized that there was no infallible indication of death except decay. Alarmists asserted that as many as one in ten bodies was buried alive, and well-publicized panics waxed and waned for two centuries, emerging most recently in response to "brain death" as a new medical standard for the end of life. As late as the 1970s, an entrepreneur marketed a security coffin, perfect for librarians, that included books to allow the newly revived to pass the time constructively while awaiting the welcome scrape of a rescuing shovel. Thankfully, Bondeson concludes that, except in sensational journalism and Gothic fiction, mistaken burials were actually extremely rare. Although claustrophobics should beware, readers in most libraries will find this book both unusual and fascinating.DKathy Arsenault, Univ. of South Florida at St. Petersburg

A Fascinating Exploration of the Fear of Premature Burial
By A Customer
In the early part of the seventeenth century, Jacques-Benigne Winslow, a Danish anatomist who lived and taught in Paris, claimed that, "it is evident from Experience, that many apparently dead, have afterwards proved themselves alive by rising from their shrouds, their coffins, and even from their graves." Winslow suggested that the means for determining death were unreliable and, hence, there was a widespread risk of being buried alive. Winslow went on to write a detailed compendium of alleged cases of premature burial, mixing fact with folklore and creating a kind of Ur-text for what subsequently became both a widespread popular fear in Western Europe and an at-times respected (if sometimes eccentric) intellectual and social movement for measures to eliminate the risk of premature burial.
In "Buried Alive", Dr. Jan Bondeson, professor at the University of Wales College of Medicine, traces the history of the fear of premature burial in Western Europe and the United States, a fear that attained its clearest popular expression in the macabre literature of writers such as Edgar Allen Poe, but which had a much more significant, albeit less well known, intellectual history. Beginning with Winslow's treatise, which was written in Latin and known by few outside the Parisian medical profession, Bondeson carefully explores how Winslow's work was translated into French, and popularized, in the mid-eighteenth century by Jean-Jacques Bruhier, another French physician. While Winslow's Latin treatise would have been confined to the dusty archives of history, Bruhier was a great popularizer and his translation and expansion of Winslow's book was widely read and translated in France and other countries of Western Europe. From this popularization, there developed a widespread popular fear of premature burial, as well as a legitimate medical debate about how to determine whether a person was dead or alive.
The popular fear and the professional debate went through many iterations. In Germany, Christopher Wilhelm Hufeland, a practicing physician, published an article in 1790 which outlined a plan to erect a house for the dead in his hometown of Weimar. The idea was based upon the general belief that the only reliable means of determining death was the onset of putrefaction. Popularizing an idea originally suggested in Bruhier's work, Hufeland's proposal was avidly endorsed within Germany and led to the construction of numerous waiting mortuaries or "Leichenhauser", where the dead were attached to alarm devices to detect movement and identify those who were not, in fact, dead and also to observe the onset of putrefaction. Indeed, Leichenhauser continued to exist into the twentieth century in Germany.
In England and the United States, both the popular and medical concern about premature burial arrived much later. Indeed, it was only in the nineteenth century that the English and Americans began to give any credence to the fear and to the medical issue and, even then, it largely became the short-lived domain of spiritualists and charlatans. It did result, however, in the development of a number of ingenious security vaults and other coffins and burial devices intended to allow the person buried alive to survive and signal those in the world of the living of their grim fate. Perhaps the most well known of these devices was the so-called "Bateson's Belfry", a coffin which allowed its still living inhabitant to ring a bell that stood above the grave, presumably permitting a post-interment rescue.
"Buried Alive" is a fascinating and methodical exploration of the fear and the intellectual and social history surrounding the idea of premature burial in Western Europe and the United States from the eighteenth century to the present. However, unlike Bondeson's earlier work, "A Cabinet of Medical Curiosities", which never ceased to fascinate and entertain, "Buried Alive" is much more like an academic treatise, a book which certainly has suitable rewards for the reader, but which is written in prose that is dry as bone.

Towards a Philosophy of Education is Charlotte Mason's final book in her Homeschooling Series, written after years of seeing her approach in action. This volume gives the best overview of her philosophy, and includes the final version of her 20 Principles. This book is particularly directed to parents of older children, about ages 12 and up, but is a valuable overview for parents of younger children as well. Part I develops and discusses her 20 principles; Part II discusses the practical application of her theories. Charlotte Mason was a late nineteenth-century British educator whose ideas were far ahead of her time. She believed that children are born persons worthy of respect, rather than blank slates, and that it was better to feed their growing minds with living literature and vital ideas and knowledge, rather than dry facts and knowledge filtered and pre-digested by the teacher. Her method of education, still used by some private schools and many homeschooling families, is gentle and flexible, especially with younger children, and includes first-hand exposure to great and noble ideas through books in each school subject, conveying wonder and arousing curiosity, and through reflection upon great art, music, and poetry; nature observation as the primary means of early science teaching; use of manipulatives and real-life application to understand mathematical concepts and learning to reason, rather than rote memorization and working endless sums; and an emphasis on character and on cultivating and maintaining good personal habits. Schooling is teacher-directed, not child-led, but school time should be short enough to allow students free time to play and to pursue their own worthy interests such as handicrafts. Traditional Charlotte Mason schooling is firmly based on Christianity, although the method is also used successfully by secular families and families of other religions.

OfficeUS Atlas (Repository)From LARS MULLER

The OfficeUS Atlas collects the exhibition research in an archive of nearly 1000 architectural projects. Organized according to individual firm histories, the Atlas documents the development of U.S. architectural offices working abroad from 1914 to the present. Offices and their projects are illustrated by over 1200 photographs and architectural drawings. OfficeUS, the U.S. Pavilion for the 2014 International Architecture Exhibition - la Biennale di Venezia, reframes the history of U.S. architecture through the lens of export in two interrelated constructs: "The Office" and "The Repository". The Repository presents 1000 projects designed by 200 US offices working abroad in a chronological archive of the last 100 years. Collectively these projects tell multiple, imbricated stories of U.S. firms, typologies, and technologies, as well as a broader narrative of modernization and its global reach. The Office engages these projects, revisiting their premises and conclusions over the course of the Biennale. It functions as a laboratory staffed by a diverse group of resident design partners collaborating with outpost offices and a rotating cast of visiting experts. Together, these two halves of OfficeUS create both an historical record of the U.S. contribution to global architectural thought, and a petri dish in which that record is submitted to contemporary agents of disruption and critique.

A remarkably comprehensive look at American's contribution to world architecture. The 1232 pages, divided into twenty chapters, use articles from the leading architectural magazines to explore 169 companies (who each get a profile spread) and 675 examples of their overseas work. Though the book starts its historical look from 1900 it isn't until the Thirties that a large number of European architects (including Neutra, Pie, van der Rohe, Gropius, Breuer, Gruen, Sert) emigrated to the US to join existing or start their own companies, they all helped create the powerhouse of the American architectural office.

The years after 1945 provided a huge increase of overseas work with, for example, American oil companies and hotels chains expanding around the world. The Cold War and politics also provided plenty of creative stimulus. US embassies and staff accommodation required contemporary structures in dozens of countries. At the end of each chapter there are spreads with thumbnails of overseas buildings plus details of the architectural office who designed them. All the embassies have a logo saying: United States of America Embassy, they keep appearing right up to 2010.

The Gulf States were another lucrative area. Pages 752--753 has a graphic with a map and timeline detailing seventy-four projects from 1948 to 1986. Riyadh, Kuwait City and Jubail are dotted with American designed structures. From the mid-nineties Asia and especially China, provided plenty of work not only the usual standout office buildings but museums, universities and schools, airports, stadiums, shopping plazas (the Jerde Partnership designed six) and the usual embassies and consulates.

I thought the book packs in a huge amount of detail, especially the essays, on a spread at the start of each chapter, the book's four editors clearly know their subject. There is though one annoyance I found with the book, frequently the spreads from the architectural magazines have the columns either side of their middle unreadable because of the thickness of this book. The title was designed by the international design company Pentagram and they really should have known better. The easy solution would be to slightly separate the reproduced magazine spreads so that they don't go into the books spine.

'Office-US Atlas' is a huge compendium of American architectural creativity.

Inherent Evil!
By King Reviewer
This is my first Steven Savile novel to read. And it won't be my last!

After devouring this awesome vampire dark fantasy epic, I have already purchased Book II: Dominion. Yes, it was that good.

In this novel, Book I:Inheritance, the evil dark vampire lord, Von Carstein, builds and creates his own massive army of the various types of the dead, from werewolves to wights, all marching to annihilate human civilization in a purely dark fantasy world.

There are numerous characters in this book, both monster and human, and all extremely interesting to read about. With loads of twists and turns, with various character's storylines, Steven Savile still manages to carry it all off with bloody panache.

With loads of blood and guts action, utilizing everything from magical swords that sing and hum for blood, to daggers and crossbows, (No guns, despite the futuristic years shown on each chapter), this is a purely dark fantasy sure to please bloodsuckers everywhere.

This dark and diabolical book is waiting for you to devour.

Go ahead. Take a walk on the wild side...

The beginning of the end.
By Detra Fitch
As usual, the beginning began at the end. It was late in the winter of 1797, within Drakenhof Castle, during the last few minutes of Otto van Drak's life. The old Count of Sylvania refused to die because his brother, Leopold, would inherit the title. So the old man held onto life, each breath filled with agony, in hope that something would change. His wish was granted by the arrival of a nobleman, Vlad von Carstein. By marrying Otto's daughter, Isabella, Vlad cheated Leopold of his title, only seconds before he cheated Leopold of his life. Vlad became Count of Sylvania. The ending had begun.

In the year 2009, Vlad finds one page from the nine Books of Nagash. The single sheet holds powerful necromantic magic. Thus Vlad begins raising the dead to create his own army. His legion of the dead soon begins its quest to overthrow the Empire. His vampiric wife, Isabella, stands at his side. His vampiric sword, keens in his hand, demanding blood.

Zombies, ghouls, and vampires kill the living. Then the newly dead raise and turn on the very people they had fought with only moments before. As each living person dies, Vlad's undead horde swells. Even though some of the vampires are slain for good by decapitation, Vlad remains standing. That is not to say that Vlad did not ever get decapitated. Yet somehow, Vlad always raises again, a scar on his throat being the only sign that his head had ever been cut off. There seems to be no way to stop him. Humans have become cattle.

***** This is the first in a trilogy. From the first page to the last, author Steven Savile brings you the stuff of nightmares. This book's tale goes until the late winter of the year 2051. (Book two will begin from there.) Readers are given the first chapter of the second book at the end. It promises more nightmares. There are so many chilling scenes that I am amazed the pages do not freeze into chunks of ice. All gothic, Vlad, and vampire fans simply MUST read this novel. *****

Vlad Von Carstein of Sylvania
By Raistlin Majere
I've just readed this book. It was great. I know, this book only arrives at stores in USA at 31 march, but I've pre-order it from the Black Library and so I've received in middle february.

Well this is a great book that will enrich not only the fans of warhammer but also the fans of vampires. If you play with the Vampire Count I think you will liked it. It won't tell you anything you don't know (About the army) but It will give some depht and history to your army. I think you will like it.

Good Things : The characters and the plot itself.

Things to improve in the next books: I think Mr. Savile would do better to take some depht to the vampires and take more time developing it's history. (well this will be fruitless even if he reads it since the second book it's already written lol)

||Minor Spoillers Ahead.. Jump ahead||

Don't take me wrong. The characters are great... We've got, of course, Vlad von Carstein. We read about it's rise and grow of his empire. How he come to be the ruler of Sylvania and finally the strike on the empire.

Something on the story I didn't like. When the thief Felix Mann stole the ring that gave immortality to the Count. It was too damn easy. Then Vlad outburst and strike recklessly the empire fortress and died. It was too quick. Bah..

It was the only thing I didn't like.

||Minor Spoillers Ended||

Well we've got a lot of characters beside the Vlad and Isabella von Carstein. Inbetween the chapters of Vlad we've the history of this minor characters.

We've got Jon Skellan and Stefan Fischer the witch-hunters, Ganz the human chancellor of Vlad. Then we've got Krueger a knight of White Wolf and the thief Felix Mann. And of course other minor characters that appear in some chapters.

In the end it is a great book but it does not finish here. More two books to be released. The next in September. It will be great 'cause some of this characters histories didn't end. I will be awaiting.

About the writing: As you know Black Library has a majority of the writters from UK. This author is American. Some words were unknown to me (I am portuguese) but apart from that the book brings forth the characteristic mayhem of the Warhammer World.

Justified: Modern Reformation Essays on the Doctrine of JustificationFrom CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform

"God justifies the ungodly": Paul's statement in Romans 4:5 has brought comfort and provoked controversy throughout the history of the church. Historically, most Protestants have seen the Reformation as a rediscovery of this gospel truth; indeed, justification as "the article by which the church stands or falls." In our day, however, neither the Reformers' account of the doctrine nor their appraisal of its significance can be taken for granted. Through various movements within Protestant theology and biblical studies, fresh (and not so fresh) challenges have made it imperative for us to reevaluate the Scriptures and the systematic as well as historical arguments that have been persuasive for so many Christians in previous eras. This book joins that contemporary conversation, bringing together voices from the pages of Modern Reformation magazine over the years. Like the magazine, this collection connects Lutheran, Reformed, and Baptist theologians, historians, and biblical scholars who are able to unpack important issues for thoughtful nonspecialists. This collection covers a lot of ground: the relationship of justification to covenant (especially recent discussions between N. T. Wright and John Piper), the law, union with Christ, as well as sanctification. A final chapter considers the contemporary relevance of justification. If theology is for the church, then the gospel is surely a matter for all of God's people to wrestle with together.

An Exciting Collection of Popular Essays on Christian Justification
By S. E. Paynter
Ryan Glomsrud and Michael S. Horton (editors), `Justified: "Modern
Reformation" Essays on the Doctrine of Justification', Modern
Reformation, 2010.

This is a nicely presented slim book of essays taken from the on-line
magazine, "Modern Reformation". The essays are therefore for
"thoughtful non-specialists", and are written by authors from a range
of "reformed" evangelical positions, including Lutheran, Reformed and
Baptist. Each of the essays is quite short, and well focused on
making one or two points.

Two minor presentation quibbles are that the footnotes are not
footnotes, but end-of-chapter notes (showing inexcusable editorial
laziness in this day and age!), and there is no information from when
in the magazine's 20 year history these papers have come.

Apart from an introduction by Glomsrud and a conclusion by Horton,
there are 13 essays, divided into four sections: "Covenant and
Justification"; "Law and Faith"; "Shall we Protest? The Debate with
Rome" and "Union and Peace with God".

In the "Covenant and Justification" section there is just one essay
(which is, however, slightly more substantial than the others), by
Michael Horton, entitled "Engaging N.T. Wright and John Piper". This,
for me, was the most important paper in the collection, for it both
helped clarify my understanding of the Bible's covenants, and helped
me to appreciate new ways in which the New Perspective is
deficient. Horton draws attention to the fact that while the terms of
all divine-human covenants are determined by God, the covenants
themselves can be distinguished between those -- like the covenants
with Adam and Moses -- which are conditional, and those like the
covenants with Abraham, David, and the New, which are
unconditional. This is the difference between "Law" and "Gospel" which
the Reformed and Lutherans have seen throughout the Bible. Horton
affirms the "covenant of grace" in passing, but this Reformed Baptist
saw the different natures of the Mosaic and Abrahamic/New covenants
probably required greater disjunction between them than some
Presbyterians have found. Horton goes on to criticise Wright's
monocovenantalism, and Piper's presentation of the doctrine of
justification outside of a covenant framework. For Horton, seeing
Jesus as fulfilling the Mosaic covenant, which itself was a
republication of the covenant of works with Adam, helps ground the
doctrine of the imputation of Christ's active obedience that Piper
rightly contends for. (I said in an earlier review of a different
collection of papers, that a paper by Horton on covenant theology and
justification encouraged me to purchase his books on the subject. This
essay encouraged me to actually start reading them!)

In the "Law and Faith" section there are four essays.

The second essay is by T. David Gordon, "Confusion about the Law in
Paul". This essay talks about the different meanings of the word "law"
in the confessional standards, briefly looks at Paul's various uses of
the word, and then critiques Dunn's "New Perspective" thesis about the
meaning of "works of the law" in Paul, and then surveys the
mono-covenantal tendencies in late 20th century Reformed thought (all
in 7 small sides!) It is interesting to see all these subjects linked,
and the critique of Dunn is all the more powerful for being put within
a wider context like that.

The third essay is "Does Faith Mean Faithfulness?" and is by Simon
Gathercole. Gathercole rightly draws attention to the meaning of
faith, and correctly observes that a "doctrine of justification by
faith alone" depends upon a proper understanding of faith. He reviews
Jewish understanding of Abraham's justifying faithfulness with Paul's
understanding of his justifying faith. He then explores the nature of
Abraham's faith a little more, before giving a mini-overview of the
"pistis Christou" debate over whether Paul teaches we are justified by
faith in Jesus Christ, or by the faithfulness of Jesus
Christ. Gathercole then gives one reading of how James and Paul can
brings out their compatibility. (This was one area where a review of
the options would have been helpful, for example, as can be found in
the essay on the subject in Carson's "Right with God"
collection - Right with God: Justification in the Bible and the World.)

The fourth essay, "The Nature of Justifying Faith" by David VanDrunen,
treats faith more dogmatically, and is an exercise in thrilling
clarity. He helpfully distinguishes the understanding of faith as an
intellectual act (which is then contrasted with reason) - typical of
the Roman Catholic tradition, with faith consisting of knowledge
(notitia); assent (assensus) and trust (fiducia) - the typical
Reformed understanding. He then reviews the biblical evidence for the
Reformed position, and argues that the biblical doctrine of
justification turns upon understanding "sola fide" correctly. I have
argued exactly this point in a number of reviews of books from the
Reformed stable on this subject recently. It is very important.

The fifth essay, "An American Tragedy: Jonathan Edwards on
Justification" by George Hunsinger, quickly identifies how Edwards
departed from the traditional Reformed position by developing a
double-grounded doctrine of justification, that saw faith as itself
fitting of reward. Hunsinger is unconvinced by Edward's attempt to
steer around making having faith a congruent merit. He finds Edwards's
position to be inconsistent.

In the "Shall we Protest?" section there are four essays.

The sixth essay, "Not by Faith Alone: The Roman Catholic Doctrine of
Justification", is an interview with the Roman Catholic theologian,
Robert Sungenis. Sungenis is allowed to articulate the Roman Catholic
position without censor or judgement. It is seen that it has not
changed at all from the Council of Trent.

In the seventh essay, "What `Evangelicals and Catholics Together'
Ignores: The Inseparable Link Between Imputation and Gospel",
R.C. Sproul reviews the now rather dated argument between those who
endorsed ECT1 and ECT2, with those like Sproul who criticised them.
Having read Sproul previously on the subject, and not knowing when
this essay was written, it is hard to assess this essay fairly. It
explains his view (now well known) that the evangelical signatories
missed the fact that the Catholic position is unchanged from that
articulated at the Council of Trent in the 16th century. Overall, this
is a helpful warning that quite different positions can be made to
look similar by those who are trying to paper-over-the-cracks. In
these debates, care must be taken to reflect on what is not being
said, as well as what is.

"Ten Propositions on Faith and Salvation" Edited by Michael Horton.
These propositions set out in short compass a clear statement about
the nature of saving faith which justifies, and gives some warnings
about mistakes people make, such as defining faith so that it includes
works, or imagining that saving faith can exist apart from
works. Excellent stuff.

The next essay is "The Doctrine of Justification: The Article on which
the Church Stands or Falls" by J.A.O. Preus III, a Lutheran
theologian. This essay equates justification by grace on account of
Christ through faith with the gospel and calls for us to be committed
to its proclamation. I admit, I found this essay disappointing. I was
looking for a much more exegetical work, which would seek to
establish, not just assume, the equation between the doctrine of
justification with the gospel. N.T. Wright makes the (valid?) point
that no-one is saved through faith in the doctrine of justification,
but through faith in Christ. What is really being claimed by calling
it the "article by which the Church stands or falls"? That we should
separate from those that don't hold to the imputation of Christ's
righteousness by faith, and seek to evangelise them? If not, what?

In the "Union and Peace with God" section there are four essays.

"A More Perfect Union? Justification and Union with Christ" by John
V. Fesko, points out that some (N.T. Wright and Rich Lusk are
mentioned) treat "union with Christ" as an alternative or more
biblical and relational replacement for the wrong-headed and
legalistic talk about "imputation of Christ's righteousness to a
believer". Fesko rejects the dichotomy, and briefly articulates a
biblical and Reformed response which relates "union with Christ" to
the Christian's "order of salvation", and shows that in justification
the legal element is relational and that justification is the legal
aspect of our union with Christ, and is the ground of our
sanctification. A helpful and exciting little essay, which presents a
satisfying biblical synthesis of truths that are not in contention.

"Christ at the Center: The Legacy of the Reformed Tradition" by Dennis
Tamurello. This is a fascinating essay by a Roman Catholic priest who
sets out what he sees as particularly helpful or insightful in Calvin
in particular. He identifies the emphasis on Christ's grace and our
union with him; the emphasis on what happens to us as we come to
communion (rather than on what happens to the elements); the emphasis
on the work of the Holy Spirit in the Christian; and the emphasis on
religion as thankfulness. Not only did this help me appreciate and see
my own "tradition" more clearly, it also humbled me that someone from
outside of it should have such a deep knowledge and appreciation of it
which in some ways surpasses my own. An encouragement to renewed study
and celebration indeed!

"The Discomfort of the Justified Life" by Jerry Bridges talks about the
discomfort of always having to struggle for holiness ... but not
for acceptance. He argues for a constant focus on the gospel, so that
we do not displace faith in Christ with either despair or
self-satisfaction in our progress in holiness.

In "Holiness: God's Work or Ours?" Harold L. Senkbeil argues that
sanctification grows out of our justification. He warns against seeing
sanctification as our contribution to our salvation. Like Bridges,
he calls us to follow the New Testament and focus on Christ's action
not the Christian's.

In Conclusion-Does Justification Still Matter? Michael S. Horton
laments the lack of understanding or awareness of justification in the
contemporary (evangelical) church, and he points to a few of reasons
why such a central doctrine to the gospel is neglected. He identifies
the culture that sees Christianity as "self-help moralism"; to the
belief that justification addresses a problem that people don't (think
they) have; and to the belief that talk about justification by faith
alone dangerously undermines obedience, sanctification and
holiness. Horton shows the error of this, and argues that we must "get
the horse before the cart" again, so that God's salvation may be
experienced in the church again, and so that true renewal will come.

The short nature of the essays, and the fact that they are sharply
focused on single issues, and aimed at the non-specialist made these
essays fresh, direct, and easy to read. They also left this reviewer
with a desire for more. Much more, and much better footnoted and
referenced, and much more interaction with the alternatives. However,
I guess then they would then have been less focused, less fresh, less
direct, and less easy to read, and no-longer aimed at the
non-specialist. This "specialist" was happy to learn from these
essays. Bravo! A fine achievement! A must read.

Five Stars!
By Michael + Ashley Spotts
SPOTTS VERDICT: ' ' ' ' '

Several weeks ago Dr. R. Scott Clark quipped that for a limited time one could "get justified" for less than $10. Of course he was referring to the sale-price of a recently published collection of essays edited by Ryan Glomsrud and Michael Horton for Modern Reformation, simply titled Justified. The irony of the joke is that even to imagine purchasing acceptance with God at any price besides the freely imputed righteousness of Christ alone received by faith alone is ludicrous, and yet it is an idea all too pervasive in Evangelical and even formally Reformed bodies of professed Christians today. While one might not be so blatant as to offer God his Discover Card (which proves again to unacceptable everywhere), there is a widespread de-emphasis away from the once-for-all finished work of Christ as Substitute onto the "faithfulness" of individuals to respond in a way which puts the final ground of justification on their own infused sanctity. To combat this error, the editors have introduced an effective volume aimed squarely at informed laymen and pastors which is rich and scriptural without being overly technical or heavy-handed. Their goal is, "to present a few catalyzing arguments that have the potential to move forward what we think is a stalled debate in evangelicalism and the wider world of New Testament studies," concerning the nature of justification, while showing that "justification still matters."

Incorporating concise, erudite articles from some of the brightest Reformed theologians and teachers, as well as balanced contributions by Lutheran and Roman Catholic Scholars, Justified is a compelling and current treatment of the issues which confront the classic Protestant formula, sola fide, solus Christus. In the first chapter, which itself is worth the price of the book, Horton delivers a error-smashing opening blow to the nasal cartilage of convenantal nomism as put forward by N. T. Wright and others in the New Perspectives on Paul. Horton informs readers that proponents of the NPP and closely-allied Federal Vision espouse a view that, "believers will be justified or vindicated on the last day on the basis of their cooperation with the Spirit. For the record this is precisely the official Roman Catholic position. It is not Pelagian, but it is also not Pauline."

With a dazzling display of academic footwork, Horton summons to court no less than eminent Jewish scholar, Jon D. Levenson, and Roman pontiff Benedict to make the case (from their own wings!) that there are in fact two sorts of ways God relates to man revealed in scripture, covenants of law and covenants of grant. Benedict goes so far as to affirm, "The covenant sealed in the Last Supper, in its inner essence, seems 'new' in the sense of the prophetic promise: it is not a contract with conditions but the gift of friendship, irrevocably bestowed. Instead of law we have grace." Unfortunately, both men confound their admissions by subsuming grace under Law. Benedict asserts, "the covenant with Moses is incorporated into the covenant with Abraham, and the Law becomes a mediator of promise...the law itself is the concrete form of grace. For to know God's will is grace." In his view, the New Covenant that is ratified at the Last Supper "is the prolongation of the Sinai covenant, which is not abrogated, but renewed". (Emphasis mine)

Horton responds, "The deepest distinction in Scripture is not between the Old and New Testaments but between the covenants of law and the covenants of promise that run throughout both. The two covenant traditions are distinguished in form and content, even throughout the same unfolding history of redemption." Whereas covenants of law function bilaterally and require fulfillment of certain terms of obedience by the subject in order to receive the promised benefits, covenants of grant are purely one-sided. God takes upon Himself to ensure the reception of promised benefits to the one with whom such a covenant is made. In the New Covenant, the elect are assured everlasting life through headship of Christ received by faith alone. "Reformed theology has never argued that God's essential righteousness is transferred to believers, but that the complete fulfillment of the law by our covenant head becomes the basis for the imputation of righteousness...Jesus fulfill all righteousness on behalf of his co-heirs. So we are saved by works after all, but by Christ's rather than by our own."

Other essays in this fourteen-hit combo-punch include Van Drunen's discussion of the nature of justifying faith; Gathercole's incisive treatment of whether faith means faithfulness; Sproul's criticism of the ecumenical documents, Evangelicals and Catholics Together; Hunsinger's insightful analysis of the tragic confusion introduced by Jonathan Edwards into the doctrine of justification; as well as many other excellent and understandable contributions. The whole volume is as warmly edifying as it is intellectually robust, and cannot fail to stir all but the stoniest hearts.

God granting grace, I believe the editors have succeeded in fashioning a tool capable of helping recover the importance of the classic Protestant understanding of the doctrine justification, if only enough persons can be enticed to discover and wield the truly good news it affirms. Wright, et al, are wrong and Modern Reformation is right: Justification through imputation sola fide still matters.

Primer on Reclaiming the "Good News" of Justification by Faith Alone, and Other Reformation Truths
By William R. Turner
Michael Horton has been a significant blessing to the modern church, not so much in his ability to chart new waters or expand new theological horizons, but in calling us back to the ancient paths (Jer. 6:16) and ancient truths (Jude 3) of the Christian Faith, specifically as it relates to the question so clearly articulated by the Reformers, "How Can I Be Right With God?" Horton brings us 13 articles from a number of Reformation scholars (of Reformed, Lutheran & Roman Catholic persuasions) which call us to both Christ-confidence in the present, and Christ-hopefulness in the future.

With the exception of Horton's Introduction and Conclusion, each essay is a quick little read of 5-10 pages, mostly digestible for the layperson, and helps the Christian focus on modern issues in an ancient doctrine. All essays were helpful, but here's some highlights for me:

Biblical and Systematic scholar David VanDrunen discusses the "Nature of Justifying Faith", written to resist the Antinomian tendencies on one side of the aisle, while also combating Roman Catholic sentiments on the other. He takes on Paul's use of Hab. 2:4 and exposition of Gal. 3:11-12.

New Testament and Pauline Scholar Simon Gathercole engages the debate in modern Pauline scholarship about "faith or faithfulness", focusing attention on Romans 4 as giving us the key to biblical evidence in deciding between the two with regards to justification. Modern Pauline scholarship (New Perspective on Paul; Federal Vision; Neo-Apocalyptic Schools) have centered the discussion more on faithfulness than faith, therefore centering Paul's argument in Romans around chapters 9-11, or 5-8, instead of 1-4, therefore calling the doctrines of imputation and Christ's active obedience into question. Gathercole is one of the premier Evangelical scholars in this particular tussle.

Lutheran Systematician J.A.O. Preus III gives a typical, yet powerful, Lutheran call to the centrality of Justification, declaring to us again that it is "The Doctrine on Which the Church Stands or Falls". Preus' essay contains powerful clarity and reminders of these precious truths.

Roman Catholic Scholar Robert Sungenis gives careful explanation of the Roman Catholic (Tridentine) position on "Justification by Faith", which essentially posits that faith (initial justification), which is 'formed by love and charity' (or works) leads to final justification. Justification is eclipsed by sanctification. They certainly view salvation as gracious (doesn't everybody), but not by grace alone (the real scandal). Sungenis is helpful to clarify the differences, and does so charitably.

On practical and pastoral essays, I found Jerry Bridges' work the most helpful as it was more exegetical (Rom. 7:14-25) in discussion than simply categorical on the Christian life. All essays were good, but Bridges was the most encouraging. His was like listening to a brief sermon which brought my eyes to gaze upon the finished work of Christ. All sermons should essentially do this in some respect.

Overall, this collection of essays serves as a helpful primer into reclaiming the "Good News" and answering the question "How Can I Be Right With God?", namely, by believing in the finished work of Jesus Christ, and in Him alone, for your salvation. Now there's an ancient scandal for us modern folks.

By Practitioners, For Practitioners*
By JCB
Broadly this excellent book is written by a special group of practitioners, for a special group of practitioners. By special, I mean unconventional; that is, for the group of professionals that don't believe in market timing, stock picking, and following whatever trend is fashionable this week.

This book is about how to assess your client's risk tolerance and unique circumstances in order to write a robust investment policy that will guide the client and the client's wealth managers for the long-term. It's about how to assess portfolio performance and how to manage client expectations. It's about how to really do many of the things you learned about in the Level III CFA curriculum but haven't done in practice (or seen many others do).

Given the expertise of the authors and the overall strength of this book, I would have welcomed a more robust discussion of asset classes (sort of an update to Swenson's robust discussion in "Unconventional Success"). This would probably have doubled the book's length, however.

If you're running money for people, and your goal is to maximize after-tax real returns given the client's situation, this book may be for you. If you're like so many of the money managers I've met, pushing a one-size-fits-all portfolio or focused on the sale rather than relationship, I don't think you'll get much out of this book.

Comprehensive and Understandable
By Robert Johnson
One would expect great work with practical application from individuals who were responsible for developing the content of the acclaimed Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Program, and The New Wealth Management delivers. It is a comprehensive treatment of the increasingly complex field of wealth management produced by expert authors operating on the intersection of practice and theory. Unlike many books in this field, the authors don’t shy away from the more complex and thorny issues influencing wealth managers. The book distills state of the art research into a form that is easily understandable to the practicing professional. A must-read for experienced practitioners as well as individuals just entering the field.
