May your moves end in checkmate

We're just getting started

Overall, this book was a solid read.

This book had me hooked nearly from that start and our heroine Willow is truly a force to be reckon with. I've stepped away from dystopian a bit because it is severely a cluttered genre at this point, but I truly enjoyed this book.

It takes place in a world where the value of a person's life is largely determined by their DNA. People and Ritters are engineered to be stronger, faster, more deadly etc.

We're introduced to an interesting cast of characters with Reece, Aspen, Morry and Fenn to name a few. I loved Aspen the most to be honest because he is just so relaxed and feels so natural. In a book that's somewhat heavy he is a breath of fresh air. Fenn was another character I adored because he is just so sweet and fatherly from the start. I hope he stays that way and doesn't turn out to be playing some sort of game.

Reece I did not like at the start but seeing as he's our girl's main love interest I knew we'd get to know him better. And I do like him by the end of the book. But he has such an air of mystery about him that I am a bit wary still. I could say the same for Morry something about that women just does not sit right.

Lastly, Thess. We did not get to meet him until nearly end of this book. Considering he was suppose to be Willow's fiance I thought we would meet him earlier to be honest. Yet at the same time as I got further and further into the book I had a feeling they were keeping his introduction potentially for when our group came into crisis, and naturally we got just that. Unfortunately, he is not the pleasant sweet jokester his cousin Aspen is. But that is no surprise. He has been groomed to essentially reign supreme. I do hope his relationship with Willow improves though because he could be a really valuable ally to her cause if she can sway him.

At this point, I think this book is a bit more romance focused than dystopian. Which is not necessarily bad because I like the main couple enough. But I'm actually much more interested in all the new technologic advances they've made, along with learning more about the rebels and their cause. Because clearly the government is corrupt. So I suppose it's a matter of seeing who is truly the lesser of two evils.

Looking forward to seeing what lies ahead for our dear Willow and hoping for her that her moves end in checkmate.

Such a unique book!

“A gambit. It's a sacrifice play made at the beginning of a chess game.”

I have two reviewing modes, 1) review immediately because FEELS and 2) review a month later because FEELS. In both cases, I'm either too overwhelmed with feels that I need to talk to someone or I'm too overwhelmed with feels that I need to process the epicness. And there was a lot of epicness here.

Gambit was such a unique book and I love it when authors come up with new ideas to write and amaze the readers, this is also the author's debut novel and way to go CLD, this is how you debut!

I don't like comparing books to other books no matter how similar they are but for this review and in order to make a point I'll have to borrow a few choice words from the X-Men universe. So, Willow's story is set in a dystorian world were people have "mutations" for lack of a better word although it has more to do with DNA and stuff, but let's use a familiar term, like the X-Men universe, that give them powers. Some have Xavier-like powers, tracking other's with powers, everyone's powers are unique and they develop after a certain age, not always being successful, it might actually be fatal for the person. Willow is a tavern's daughter until the day a Core officer appears, looking for something. Willow and Reece hate each other from the get go and it's hilarious and so fun to read, he's cold and professional, literally won't tolerate her behavior, and she is always on his case.

There isn't much to spoil, it does say in the blurb that her identity is in question so I might as well talk about it since it actually happens pretty early. Willow was switched as a baby from the Core city and given to her foster family and someone placed another baby in her place; now that the fraud is exposed just before an arranged marriage took place, the Roanoke family are searching for their biological daughter.

There's a a great world building and a lot of story showing instead of story telling which is lacking in a lot of successful novels so this was so refreshing to read and actually have to be patient until things were revealed instead of falling face first into the story and a sea of brand new information. The story takes the readers to an amazing journey that I enjoyed immensely.

There is a romance somewhere between the dystopian world - that is kickass and actually has a more medieval feel to it but with technology and is taking place in London, we even get a glimpse of the Big Ben - between Willow and someone I won't spoil. But the story made me work for it, I was actually waiting to see how the romance was going to come into the picture, she already has an arranged marriage waiting for her, but she does have a life back home and an almost boyfriend, Asp, which was adorable and so freaking cute! But also, her new life is pretty exciting at the same time, and there is a person I didn't see being into her... all I'm saying is, well played book!

Secondary characters and the rest are just as fascinating, the Ritters were something else, I need more of those creatures please! Every character was awesome to be honest, this was too good!

The writing is amazing, the world building is extraordinaire and the characters have flaws and they are badass, witty and sassy and they are multi-dimensional, I'm honestly scared to read the sequel, I don't know how it can get any better but I'm looking forward to being pleasantly surprised!

GAMBIT was full of mystery and intrigue and kept me interested.

I don't exactly know what I was expecting when I started reading GAMBIT, but it ended up being way more than I thought it would be and I really enjoyed it.

Willow lives what she considers a normal life with her family in a small village until a military officer shows up and questions her identity. She quickly learns that the normal life she has always loved is about to change and she doesn't see it as for the better. Besides the occasional sixteen-year-old tantrum, I found Willow to be a strong character. I enjoyed her way of thinking and I enjoyed watching her grow into herself and her new life.

If I am 100% honest I seriously hated the romantic interest. He was HORRIBLE to Willow in the beginning and it took me a really long time to get over it and look past it. As I got to know him, I ended up liking him a little more, but I'm not sold on him yet. I am interested to see what he does in book two and if it makes me see him in a whole other light.

GAMBIT was full of mystery and intrigue and kept me interested. I loved the world and the whole genetic code causing abilities story line really worked for me. There were quite a few side characters that kept things even more interesting than they already were. I think as the series continues they will continue to intrigue me. I am really excited to see what happens next for Willow and hope the wait won't be too long until book two.

What would Ali Mazrui say about Africa today?

"The African Condition" is a series of lectures that Ali Mazrui prepared and presented in 1979-1980. There are multiple elements to the collection that make for fascinating reading now in 2014. As in any philosophical, historical perspective, it is interesting to compare the "prophecies" and theories of past decades with the actual outcomes. Ali Mazrui, a Kenyan, who studied at Oxford and taught at Makarere University in Uganda, brings his personal experience, cultural ethos and 1970s political atmosphere into the themes of his lectures. This is not to say, however, that his ideas have lost their relevance. That would be far from the truth.

Ali Mazrui writes in the context of the Cold War, South African apartheid and pre-Zimbabwean independence. Therefore, a few of the book’s pages are pre-occupied with analysis that stems from these circumstances. The first hypothesis of Mazrui's that did not appear to come about as he envisioned, was today's Zimbabwe and South Africa.

Mazrui, seemed to assume that white settlers in Zimbabwe and South Africa are more European than African, suggesting that upon independence and black African majority rule, the white's would return to Europe. That was not the case. White southern Africans, generations removed from the early settlers, loved Africa and were indeed Africans. Recent events in Zimbabwe have forced many white farmers to leave but they have migrated to places like Mozambique, Botswana or Zambia. If racism is to be eradicated in Africa, as Mazrui rightly prophesied, would it not also follow that whites could be Africans as well? It is tribalism, on the other hand, that Mazrui says will take more time to do away with. Sadly, perhaps more time than even Mazrui hopes.

In the easy, direct style of prose, Mazrui continues his political discussion of Africa's condition addressing development, military security, religious syncretism and ethnic dilemmas. Mazrui's writing is clearly influenced by his Kenyan/Ugandan experience but he invokes details from personal interviews with Senegal and Zambia's first presidents, opposition party leaders and his own dealings with Idi Amin. The universal Sub-Saharan application intends to explain that Africa's conflicts are not religious, in fact African families are inter-religious and at the same time syncretistic.

Along with an interesting discussion of the "pacifist" Christianity that was impressed on African's to more easily 'subdue' them, Mazrui discusses what he calls the "imperial monopoly of warfare". In the age of colonialism, the European empires controlled the number guns allowed to specific groups within their colonies. Mazrui compared that to the nuclear non-proliferation agenda of again "controlling" who can have what weapons and how. Fast forward to 2014 and we see initiatives in every African country in training local government forces to secure their own borders.

The argument today may be changing. France, U.S. and powers are still accused of "meddling" in African affairs but what would Mazrui say about the training of today's African forces? Would he call it too selective to be sincere, skewed to propping up corrupted dictators or perhaps nearer to his vision of an African continent truly applying its potential to benefiting regional security?

For those who follow Africa politically, culturally and through the lens of security or development, this is an excellent read, written from a scholar of high repute. When it comes to the study of Sub-Saharan Africa, it is always better to engage with the local perspective.

Mazrui, the Universal African

Many cosmopolitan Africans are qualified to describe or analyze Africa's various blights, but few are as articulate, as insightful and charming, and as exquisitely educated as Mazrui. He is irreverent without being cynical, he assigns blame and assumes it, and at the same time he campaigns for a sign of justice in a world rampant with ravenous greed and heartless corruption, within the framework of a leadership gap. No part of the world has suffered so much from this as the African continent, so diverse it suffers in a variety of ways, and so stricken its ills may never be overcome. Yet here we have a voice in Mazrui, a universal voice, that can speak to the West in the lexicon of the West.

This book gives great insight into the connection between the blight of present day sub-saharan Africa and the colonial conquests of european powers on her soil. Mazrui reveals the heart of a living socio-political paradox that has affected the progress of African interdependence and unity revealing the weaknesses this fractured continent faces in the wake of globalization and her push to find justice for her people in a modern world. Riveting reading for the expansion of one's world view and a true understanding of what is at the heart of the African condition!

About the Author

Lise Wallach is Senior Research Scholar in the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience at Duke University. As Research Professor of Psychology at Duke for many years, she has also held faculty positions at Bryn Mawr, Wellesley, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has written on theoretical and philosophical psychology and on various aspects of cognition, including three previous books with Michael A. Wallach.

Michael A. Wallach is Professor Emeritus of Psychological and Brain Sciences at Duke University. In addition to Duke, he has also held faculty positions at Harvard, MIT, and the University of Chicago. He was Editor of the Journal of Personality for a decade (1963-72) and also Series Editor of the SUNY Press Alternatives in Psychology book series for two decades (1989-2008). He has published extensively on a number of topics ranging across cognitive, personality, social, clinical, developmental, educational, and theoretical psychology

Borrowed the book from my college library, needed a copy...

Great book that presents the problems of the philosophy of consciousness very well for such a short piece. The humor is wonderful and their writing style is certainly admirable, it detracts nothing from their explanations but instead adds to it. A good read for those that have at least some philosophical reading experience, though even with none careful reading of the book will still be insightful.

There are many better renditions than this!

This is an overly simplistic and poorly written introduction to the Arthur legend. If there weren't many better presentations of these tales for young readers, there might be an excuse for such a substandard rendering. Unless you want your kids to think that writing sentence fragments is preferable to constructing clear complex sentences, you might want to stay away from the entire "Bullseye Step Into Classic" series.

Awful writing, terrible grammar, bad for children

In addition to the ham-handed telling of the story, the writing in these Bullseye books is just terrible. Half-sentences. Written like this. Or this. Part of the value of such books is that young readers will learn to read "chapter books." But the English and grammar in these books is so abysmal as to render them useless for this task. I was very disappointed.

Textbook example of how NOT to write sentences

It is hard to believe a book this poorly written could make past the editors! There were so many run-on and incomplete sentences I had trouble reading it to my daughter. I can only imagine what my second grade daughter went through reading on her own. We will keep this book if only to serve as an example of how NOT to construct sentences. There is a year's worth of grammar exercises in this book.

A Real Find!

Of the two books I own on The Andy Griffith Show, this is definitely my favorite. The detailed episode summaries are a breath of fresh air, and point out lil things you never bothered to take stock of. And the comments from the writers and actors make it even better! Man, I wish something like this would come out for The Monkees' TV show! If you like The Andy Griffith Show, you MUST have this book in your collection!

A Few New Insights

For all you Mayberry fans out there, this is a pretty good book. It offers a few new insights on all those episodes that we have seen many times. I was kind of disappointed in the fact that most of them are from the story writers and not from the actors. However, it is evident that a lot of research went into this book. If theirs any Mayberry books that provide more insight from the actors point of view please let me know. Happy Reading!

Got better the more I read!

At first I thought this book was a little slow and not interesting since it was from the writers point of view but after reading several pages I fell in love with this book. I really enjoyed the information about what was written contrasted with what was actually filmed and where ideas came from etc. Definitely worth reading if you are a serious TAGS fan. I hope a Mayberry 102 will come out with info on more episodes.

Neither a hands-on investment manual nor a basic introduction to investing, Kansas's book straddles the divide between those two extremes, but has trouble finding a comfortable spot. Kansas tries too hard to reach casual readers, as when he compares the New York Stock Exchange to a lemonade stand or a trading specialist to a traffic cop, two simple analogies that give way to a stream of jargon and technical details that may overwhelm readers unfamiliar with big finance. Luckily, Kansas never strays far from the wry humor he uses to enliven the finer points. For example, in a discussion of the high risks of venture capital, Kansas writes, "Venture capital is a lot as its name applies, though one is tempted to place 'ad' before 'venture.'" The book isn't afraid to wade into controversies such as Henry Blodgett's questionable stock recommendations, and at its best it feels as though an experienced financial journalist is gossiping with the reader over drinks. As its title suggests, this book is a primer, providing backgrounds on every major type of investment or financial activity, with a pleasing economy of style that incorporates sidebars for people seeking more in-depth information on how to read stock listings or the history of the Dow Jones Industrial Average. The ideal reader of this book isn't a total financial novice, but readers with an at least cursory understanding of trading, investments and economics will find Kansas' book a rewarding read.

Complete? Guidebook? Not so much.

The "Getting Going" series in the Wall Street Journal is a good one, well worth reading, and has helped the WSJ become more relevant to those of us who have less than a billion dollars net worth. (In my case, $999,999,999 less.) That's why I had high hopes for this book. While it does its job admirably, the question is: What is it's job? The title suggests it is "Complete" and a "Guidebook." In reality, its job is to be "A brief, concise introduction at a high level to financial and economic terms."

THAT job, it does admirably. You'll get a overview of all the terms you're likely to run into: stocks, bonds, options, futures, etc. But a brief overview is about all it does. There are some pearls, a few insightful comments, and (the best part) a nice selection of web sites for future reference.

If you're looking for a quick read, and a concise overview of finances and American economics, this book is very good. But if you think it will actually help you do something practical with your own finances, you may be disappointed by its superficial treatment.

Scoring note: The book would have been a 4 if the title had been "A Brief Overview of American Economics and Investing."
